Counting-Stars: A Multi-evidence, Position-aware, and Scalable Benchmark for Evaluating Long-Context Large Language Models

Paper · 2025 · Mingyang Song, Mao Zheng and Xuan Luo

Summary

Popular long-context tests such as needle-in-a-haystack ask a model to find one inserted sentence. Recent LLMs score almost perfectly on them, so these tests no longer separate strong models from weak ones. The authors propose Counting-Stars, a benchmark that measures how well a model gathers many scattered pieces of evidence across inputs of up to about 128K tokens.

Short sentences about a little penguin counting stars are placed at equal intervals inside unrelated filler text. The model must return every reported count as a JSON list. The benchmark has two variants:

  • Searching: each inserted sentence gives a single count.
  • Reasoning: each sentence first states a wrong count and then a corrected one, and the model must keep only the correct values.

Because evidence positions are fixed and known, errors can be traced to specific locations in the context. The set-up also scales cheaply to longer inputs.

Testing five commercial LLMs showed that accuracy drops as context grows and tasks get harder. This indicates that extended context windows remain far from reliable for collecting multiple pieces of evidence.

Key points

  • The benchmark includes a Chinese version built on The Story of the Stone and an English version built on Paul Graham Essays. The number of inserted evidence sentences can be raised to 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, or 1024.
  • The evaluated models were GPT-4 Turbo, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Claude3 Opus, GLM-4, and Moonshot-v1. They were accessed through APIs (temperature 0) or poe.com.
  • Gemini 1.5 Pro achieved the best overall scores, while GPT-4 Turbo was the most consistent across tasks.
  • Most models perform well below 32K tokens, and performance then falls as length increases. The decline is not strictly monotonic: a model can score higher at 120K than at 100K.
  • A clear "lost-in-the-middle" effect was not confirmed, though evidence near the start and end was recovered slightly better. Code and data are available at github.com/nick7nlp/Counting-Stars.
