BAMBOO: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Evaluating Long Text Modeling Capacities of Large Language Models
Paper · 2024 · Zican Dong, Tianyi Tang, Junyi Li et al.
Summary
Long-context LLMs are increasingly common, but earlier benchmarks such as ZeroSCROLLS, L-Eval and LongBench have two weaknesses. Their test texts may already appear in pre-training data, and some tasks rely on unreliable generation metrics like BLEU. The authors present BAMBOO to address both. Its ten manually constructed datasets span five categories of tasks: answering questions, spotting hallucinations, putting texts in order, modeling language, and completing code. The texts come from Wikipedia, ACL papers, Welsh assembly meeting records, TV show recaps, GAO reports and code. To limit contamination, most sources date from 2023. Where older sources are used, the answers were altered. Every task is scored with an exact automatic metric. The benchmark has two length tiers so models with different context windows can be compared. In tests of five long-context models, ChatGPT-16k led on most datasets, while the others struggled, especially on unfamiliar task formats. The analysis yields practical guidance on context extension, compression and prompt layout for long-text modeling.
Key points
- Two subsets: BAMBOO-4k and BAMBOO-16k each contain 1502 samples, averaging about 3152 and 7500 tokens (gpt-3.5-turbo tokenizer).
- Datasets: AltQA, PaperQA, MeetingQA, SenHallu, AbsHallu, ShowsSort, ReportSumSort, ShowsPred, MeetingPred and PrivateEval.
- Metrics: accuracy, P/R/F1, concordance index (CI) for sorting, and pass@1 for code.
- Findings:
- Enlarging the context window helps on medium-length inputs but hurts on short ones.
- Supplying evidence or compressing the input generally improves scores, though smaller models remain weak.
- Results depend on where the instruction is placed, and evidence located at the start or end of the input is easier for models to use.
- Availability: data, prompts and code are released at github.com/RUCAIBox/BAMBOO.
