BLEnD-Vis: Benchmarking Multimodal Cultural Understanding in Vision Language Models

Paper · 2026 · Bryan Chen Zhengyu Tan, Weihua Zheng, Zhengyuan Liu et al.

Summary

Vision-language models (VLMs) are used worldwide, yet current cultural evaluations mostly test plain fact recall or single-image grounding. They do not show whether a model's cultural knowledge holds up when a question is reworded or moved into the visual modality. BLEnD-Vis addresses this gap. It extends the text-only BLEnD dataset by first using GPT-4o to keep only templates whose answers are concrete, visually depictable entities. It then inverts each question from region-to-entity into entity-to-region form and generates matching images with Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Human annotators checked the rewritten templates and the images. The result is three parallel multiple-choice formats covering 16 regions:

  • the original text,
  • a rephrased text version,
  • a VQA version.

Twelve VLMs were tested. Rewording often lowers their accuracy, while images frequently help. However, models seldom answer the text and image versions of the same fact correctly together, and weaker results cluster in lower-resource regions. The benchmark therefore separates brittle associations from transferable cultural understanding.

Key points

  • Resource: 313 validated templates, 4,916 generated images (one per answer–region pair) and 21,782 MCQ instances in each of three aligned formats. It is released under CC-BY-4.0 on GitHub (Social-AI-Studio/BLEnD-Vis).
  • Source data: 500 English SAQ templates from BLEnD, with answers consolidated from about 306k BLEnD MCQ instances. Seven of the 320 tangible templates were dropped because they lacked enough distinct answer options.
  • Cross-modal consistency: mean joint correctness on the rephrased-text and VQA versions of the same fact is only 42.19%. Model size does not reliably predict performance.
  • Fine-tuning transfer: training on text raised VQA accuracy by about 16.15% on average, whereas training on VQA improved text accuracy by only about 3.98%.
  • Limitations: the benchmark is English-only, uses synthetic images that may contain stereotypes, covers only tangible everyday knowledge, and evaluates in a multiple-choice format only.
