STRUDEL: Unrolling a Benchmark for Evaluating Vision-Language Models on Structured Diagram Understanding across Domains
Summary
Vision-language models (VLMs) are rarely tested on structured diagrams, where meaning depends on symbols and the exact relations between them. Examples include circuit schematics, molecules, sheet music, process charts and UML. The authors build STRUDEL, a synthetic benchmark covering 8 domains and 20 diagram categories. Text-only LLMs, guided by personas and three complexity levels, write code in formal representation languages (FRLs) such as SPICE netlists, SMILES, ABC-Notation, BPMN and PlantUML. A rendering toolkit turns this code into images. Because the code fully defines each diagram's structure, the ground truth for every question is known exactly.
Samples go through several filters: code validity, node counts, aspect ratio, visual variance and deduplication. An LLM judge then checks correctness. The authors also show that LLMs can reliably produce valid FRL code.
Across 35 VLMs, models do well at matching images to text but are weak at counting and identifying elements. Results on image-to-code translation differ widely between models. Biology and music notation are the hardest domains. The resource matters because it can be extended and regenerated to probe and improve symbolic visual reasoning.
Key points
- Coverage: 8 domains, 20 image categories and five kinds of tasks: recognizing elements, counting them, analyzing diagram structure, pairing images with matching text, and converting images back into code.
- Generation and validation models: Qwen3-Coder-480B-A35B-Instruct-FP8 generates the code, and GPT-OSS-120B acts as the correctness judge. Rendering uses a toolkit of 35 tools.
- Formal representation languages: The FRLs include SPICE, SMILES, ABC-Notation, PlantUML, BPMN, Newick, OpenQASM, ViennaRNA, FEN, Mermaid, DBML, GeoJSON and Verilog. Several of these are absent from earlier benchmarks.
- Domain results: Models handle system modeling, business processes and geographic diagrams fairly reliably. They struggle with biology and musical notation.
- Release and limitations: The pipelines, toolkit and dataset are available at github.com/danielsteinigen/STRUDEL. Because all images are clean digital renders, the benchmark does not include hand-drawn or scanned diagrams.
