VIGiA: Instructional Video Guidance via Dialogue Reasoning and Retrieval

Paper · 2026 · Diogo Glória-Silva, David Semedo and Joao Magalhaes

Summary

VIGiA (Visual and Instructional Guiding Assistant) is a multimodal assistant that guides a user through a multi-step Cooking or DIY task in conversation. Earlier plan-guidance systems mostly handled text only. Even MM-PlanLLM, which did use video, could not answer questions about photos supplied by the user.

VIGiA pairs a visual encoder with an LLM through an MLP connector. It is trained with a separate objective for each capability:

  • plan-grounded answer generation (PGAG),
  • plan-aware VQA (pVQA),
  • visually-informed step generation (VSG), which copies the plan step that matches a user image,
  • conversational video moment retrieval (CVMR), which uses dedicated start and end representations to find frames.

Training proceeds in multiple stages and draws on several datasets, including a new semi-automatically generated corpus called InstructionVidDial. VIGiA outperformed both domain-specific and general-purpose LVLMs on all plan-guidance tasks and exceeded 90% accuracy on pVQA. It also kept more general image understanding than MM-PlanLLM. The work shows that a single model can track progress through a plan, interpret user photos, and retrieve video moments within one dialogue.

Key points

  • New dataset: InstructionVidDial contains multimodal dialogues aligned with Cooking and DIY plans. The model, code and data are available at github.com/dmgcsilva/vigia.
  • Multistage training ablation:
    • Stages 1 and 3 together raise CVMR R@1 (m=0.5) by about 20 points.
    • Stage 2 adds roughly 200 points on MME Perception.
    • Removing RoPE frame-position encoding lowers R@1 m=0.5 from 30.74 to 26.76.
  • pVQA data volume: Adding pVQA training data also improves VSG. Most metrics peak at 50% of the pVQA data, while pVQA accuracy reaches 94.02 with the full set.
  • Dialogue-level evaluation: An LLM-as-a-judge rated 54 test dialogues for State Tracking, Instruction Clarity and Plan Adherence. VIGiA led clearly on clarity, and state tracking proved the hardest dimension.
  • Limitation: The authors note a possible western bias, because the domain data came from English-language sources.
