UltraEval-Audio: A Unified Framework for Comprehensive Evaluation of Audio Foundation Models

Paper · 2026 · Qundong Shi, Jie Zhou, Biyuan Lin et al.

Summary

Evaluating audio foundation models (AFMs) is difficult because benchmarks and evaluation code are scattered across sources. Audio codecs have no agreed-upon holistic assessment, and spoken QA benchmarks are almost entirely English. UltraEval-Audio is an open-source, modular toolkit that addresses all three gaps. It runs a whole evaluation from a single command and publishes public leaderboards. It handles several input/output combinations, including text-to-audio, audio-to-text and mixed text+audio prompts, across speech, music and environmental sound. Tasks are organised into a taxonomy with three branches: understanding, generation and codec. For codecs, the authors measure three things: how well meaning survives reconstruction, how well the speaker's voice is preserved, and acoustic quality. For Chinese, they release two new spoken benchmarks: SpeechCMMLU for knowledge and SpeechHSK for graded listening comprehension. The paper also examines how benchmark results correlate with each other and checks that leaderboard rankings remain largely stable under alternative aggregation rules. This gives the community, especially Chinese-language work, a reproducible basis for comparing AFMs.

Key points

  • Scale and licence: The framework covers 10 languages, 14 task categories, 24 models and 36 benchmarks. It is released under Apache-2.0 at github.com/OpenBMB/UltraEval-Audio.
  • Codec evaluation:
    • Semantics is measured as ASR-WER, transcribing reconstructed audio with Whisper-large-v3 for English and Paraformer-zh for Chinese.
    • Timbre is measured as cosine similarity of WavLM-large speaker embeddings.
    • Acoustics is scored with UTMOS together with DNSMOS P.835 and P.808.
  • SpeechCMMLU: Built from CMMLU items voiced with CosyVoice2. Only samples whose ASR back-transcription matched exactly (CER = 0) were kept, leaving 3,519 samples.
  • SpeechHSK: Uses official HSK listening recordings for the question stems, with answer options re-recorded by native speakers. It has 170 samples across six proficiency levels.
  • Analysis:
    • Spearman correlations show that benchmarks within the same task family (e.g., LibriSpeech splits) move together, while AST and MELD diverge from ASR.
    • Ranking robustness was tested with LOBO, LOTGO, z-score and min-max normalisation. Rankings held up overall, except MiDaShengLM-7B, which was sensitive because of its TED-LIUM result.
