PersonaArena: Dynamic Simulation for Evaluating and Enhancing Persona-Level Role-Playing in Large Language Models

Paper · 2026 · Wenlong Shi, Jianxun Lian, Mingqi Wu et al.

Summary

PersonaArena targets a gap in how LLM role-playing is studied. Most prior work tests famous fictional characters or celebrities, which models may simply recall from training data. It also relies on static formats such as Q&A probes or BLEU-style metrics. This paper instead examines persona-level role-play: portraying ordinary people convincingly in everyday social settings.

The authors filtered the public Blog Authorship corpus to build a bank of 1,000 anonymized personas. Each persona has a narrative plus structured attributes covering demographics, occupation, personality, values, interests and experiences. For each persona, an Environment Agent generates a social scenario with supporting NPCs. The tested model plays the protagonist across a multi-turn simulation, and a panel of debating LLM judges rates fidelity, coherence and adaptability.

According to the authors, the framework produces high-quality behavioral trajectories for evaluation. These trajectories also work as post-training data: fine-tuning on them (SFT and DPO) improved persona consistency and realism. This matters for building believable social agents and for social-science simulations that depend on realistic human behavior.

Key points

  • Persona bank: built from raw data of over 19k users and 681k blog posts (Blog Authorship corpus on Hugging Face). An LLM replaced private details with random substitutes and inferred the profiles. Filtering left 1,000 distinct personas.
  • Simulation design:
    • The Environment Agent creates each scenario with 2–3 NPCs and routes actions to the most affected character.
    • Agents follow a Belief–Desire–Intention structure. The protagonist updates both Self-Belief and Env-Belief, while NPCs keep their self-identity fixed.
  • NPC models: NPCs run on strong fixed LLMs such as Qwen3-32B or GPT-4 models. This keeps interactions reproducible and isolates the evaluated model's own abilities.
  • Adaptive early stopping: the simulation tracks five checkpoint dimensions (Background, Personality, Values, Interests, Experiences). It ends once these are sufficiently expressed or new evidence becomes redundant.
  • Training and limitations: SFT and DPO on PersonaArena trajectories improved role-playing, and code is available at aka.ms/personaarena. The authors acknowledge three limitations:
    • LLM judges still fall short of human judgment.
    • The choice of NPC model can affect results.
    • Blog-derived personas may carry demographic and platform biases.
