CharacterEval: A Chinese Benchmark for Role-Playing Conversational Agent Evaluation
Paper · 2024 · Quan Tu, Shilong Fan, Zihang Tian et al.
Summary
Role-Playing Conversational Agents (RPCAs) are LLM-based chatbots that take on fictional characters to entertain users and provide emotional value. Progress in this area has been hard to measure because there was no thorough benchmark, and earlier datasets were either generated by LLMs or noisy from automatic extraction. The authors built CharacterEval, a Chinese benchmark based on dialogues from Chinese novels and scripts. GPT-4 extracted the dialogue scenes, utterances and character behaviors, human annotators then kept only high-quality dialogues, and character profiles were added from Baidu Baike. Models are assessed on thirteen metrics grouped into four dimensions: conversational ability, character consistency, role-playing attractiveness and MBTI-based personality back-testing. The subjective metrics are scored by CharacterRM, a reward model trained on human ratings, which agrees with human judgments more closely than GPT-4 does. Across open and closed models, Chinese LLMs, led by BC-NPC-Turbo, generally beat the GPT series at Chinese role-play. The work offers a reusable and fairly cheap way to evaluate character-driven dialogue systems in a language other than English.
Key points
- The dataset contains 1,785 multi-turn dialogues, which yield 11,376 evaluation examples, and covers 77 leading characters from Chinese literary and screen sources.
- To segment long texts, GPT-4 first detects "plot twists" so that each chunk holds one complete plot before dialogues are extracted.
- The four dimensions break down as follows:
- Character consistency: knowledge exposure, knowledge accuracy, hallucination, and behavior and utterance consistency.
- Role-playing attractiveness: human-likeness, communication skill, expression diversity and empathy.
- Personality back-testing: models complete an MBTI assessment, and their answers are compared with the known MBTI types of the characters.
- CharacterRM was trained on scores from 12 annotators who rated responses from different models.
- Results by model:
- BC-NPC-Turbo leads in most dimensions, with MiniMax close behind.
- GPT-4 is strongest in knowledge exposure, communication skill and personality back-testing.
- InternLM-20B has the best empathy score and stays stable over long conversations.
- Most other models decline as the number of dialogue turns grows.
