MultiFinBen: Benchmarking Large Language Models for Multilingual and Multimodal Financial Application

Paper · 2026 · Xueqing Peng, Lingfei Qian, Yan Wang et al.

Summary

Financial work draws on documents in many languages and formats, such as scanned filings, charts, and earnings-call audio. Most LLM finance benchmarks are still English-only, text-only, and so easy that leading models score near the ceiling. MultiFinBen addresses this with an expert-annotated benchmark of 36 datasets. It covers five languages (English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Greek), three modalities (text, vision, audio), seven financial task categories, and three difficulty tiers. The authors add two task types not found in earlier benchmarks. The first is cross-lingual financial question answering over mixed-language filings and news. The second is OCR on scanned financial PDFs that contain tables and charts. The benchmark does not simply pool existing datasets. Instead, it estimates difficulty from the performance of strong models and keeps, for each modality–language–task tier, the dataset that best separates models. Across 21 models, even GPT-4o reaches only 46.01% overall, and scores fall sharply on multilingual and hard tasks. This exposes real gaps for financial LLMs built for non-English markets, including Ukrainian-language applications.

Key points

  • Scope and new datasets: The benchmark has 36 datasets. The new ones are PolyFiQA-Easy and PolyFiQA-Expert (multilingual financial QA) and four financial OCR sets: EnglishOCR, JapaneseOCR, SpanishOCR, and GreekOCR.
  • Difficulty-aware selection: Dataset difficulty comes from the mean standardized scores of GPT-4o and LLaMA-3.1-70B-Instruct. For each modality–language–task tier, the dataset with the largest inter-model gap is kept.
  • Main results: GPT-4o leads with 46.01% overall. It does relatively well on vision and audio but scores only 9.79% and 5.31% on the multilingual tasks. Average performance drops from 32.73% on easy tasks to 7.20% on hard ones. The new PolyFiQA and OCR sets are among the hardest tasks.
  • Task taxonomy: Following FinBen, tasks are grouped into IE, TA, QA, TG, RM, FO, and DM.
  • Limitations and release: Audio covers only English earnings calls, the new datasets are small, and scores are not adjusted against random or majority baselines. Data, code, and the Open-FinLLM-Leaderboard are public on Hugging Face (TheFinAI) and GitHub.
