FinMME: Benchmark Dataset for Financial Multi-Modal Reasoning Evaluation
Paper · 2025 · Junyu Luo, Zhizhuo Kou, Liming Yang et al.
Summary
FinMME addresses the lack of specialised benchmarks for testing multimodal large language models (MLLMs) on financial material, where charts are data-dense and interpretation requires expert knowledge. The authors built a dataset of 11,099 samples from financial research. Each sample pairs a chart with a caption, research-report context, hierarchical labels (market, asset class, chart class) and a question with a reference answer. Questions are single-choice, multiple-answer or numeric calculation, and they span three cognitive levels: fine-grained perception, comprehensive understanding, and analysis and reasoning. Twenty annotators labelled the data. Their labels were cross-checked against the outputs of several MLLMs, and experts resolved disagreements. Models are scored with FinScore, which normalises results across domains and penalises hallucinated answers. Across 17 tested models, even GPT-4o reaches only about half of the attainable score. Results stay within roughly 1% across prompts and repeated runs. FinMME therefore provides a stable and demanding yardstick for finance-oriented multimodal AI, a domain with little tolerance for errors.
Key points
- Coverage: 11,099 samples built on 4,458 unique images, spanning 18 financial domains (e.g., TMT, Fixed Income, Macroeconomic Research) and 6 asset classes (Equity, Foreign Exchange, Rates, Commodity, Credits, Cross-Asset). Charts fall into 10 main types and 21 subtypes.
- Cognitive levels: 6,466 samples target fine-grained perception, 2,333 comprehensive understanding and 2,300 analysis and reasoning. By content, 7,601 samples come from equity research.
- Annotation quality: 20 annotators worked under a consistency check against multiple MLLMs, with expert review of conflicting cases. The error rate on critical questions is reported to be below 1%.
- Evaluation: 6 proprietary and 11 open-source models were tested. GPT-4o averages about 46.6 FinScore across single-answer, multi-answer and calculation questions. Calculation questions are the hardest, and Foreign Exchange is among the weakest asset classes. Qwen-VL-2.5 72B is competitive with proprietary models in some sectors.
- Availability: The data are released on Hugging Face (
luojunyu/FinMME) and the evaluation code on GitHub (luo-junyu/FinMME). Standard deviations over 5 runs stay under 1%.
