CoReTab: Improving Multimodal Table Understanding with Code-driven Reasoning
Paper · 2026 · Van-Quang Nguyen and Takayuki Okatani
Summary
Training data for multimodal table understanding, such as MMTab, mostly pairs table images with brief answers. Models trained this way give terse outputs that lack accuracy and explain little of how they reached an answer. CoReTab tackles this with automatically checkable reasoning supervision. An LLM annotator (Qwen3) receives a table's source code (HTML, LaTeX or Markdown), a question and the gold answer. It then writes step-by-step reasoning plus a Python program. The program is executed, and a sample is kept only if its output matches the gold answer. Applied to 11 datasets drawn from MMTab, this yields 115K verified samples, at far lower cost than human annotation. Qwen2.5-VL is fine-tuned with LoRA through a three-step pipeline: it first learns to recognize tables during pretraining, is then instruction-tuned using CoReTab, and is finally refined with reinforcement learning. Across 17 MMTab benchmarks it beats MMTab-trained baselines in question answering, fact verification and structure understanding. Its outputs are also inspectable reasoning traces, which matters wherever table-based answers must be trusted.
Key points
- The CoReTab dataset has 115K code-verified samples from 11 tasks. Responses average 529 tokens, about ten times longer than MMTab or SynTab answers.
- CoReTab-Qwen2.5-VL improves on Table-Qwen2.5-VL by +6.2% on TQA, +5.7% on TFV and +25.6% on TSU (averages over 17 MMTab benchmarks).
- Removing the
<code>part of the annotations costs 4.19 (TQA), 3.26 (TFV) and 17.96 (TSU) points. The RL stage helps TQA and TFV but slightly hurts TSU. - The gains carry over to InternVL3 8B, which improves by +5.26, +5.86 and +13.32 over its MMTab-trained version.
- Annotation runs on local GPUs, in contrast to the roughly $12,000 reportedly spent on 2,000 TableBench examples. Limitations include English-only academic sources, clean table codes, and no coverage of table-to-text generation.
