BitBypass: A New Direction in Jailbreaking Aligned Large Language Models with Bitstream Camouflage
Paper · 2026 · Kalyan Nakka and Nitesh Saxena
Summary
The paper looks at how safety-aligned LLMs can still be manipulated into producing harmful output. It introduces BitBypass, a black-box jailbreak. The attack hides a single trigger word of a harmful request by writing it as binary groups separated by hyphens, and a placeholder stands in for that word in the request text. A system prompt then guides the model to decode the hidden word and keeps its attention away from safety checks. The authors call this a new attack direction because it relies on bit-level data representation rather than classic prompt engineering or whole-prompt encodings.
They tested it on five frontier models against direct harmful requests, four baseline attacks and several guard models. They used two public benchmarks and a new phishing-oriented dataset. BitBypass bypassed alignment more often and was stealthier, meaning it triggered fewer refusals. Newer chat interfaces were also still vulnerable. The work matters because it exposes a persistent alignment gap. The authors suggest screening system prompts as a possible defense.
Key points
- Target models: GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Llama 3.1 70B and Mixtral 8x22B. Baselines: AutoDAN, Base64, DeepInception and DRA.
- Guard models tested: OpenAI Moderation, ShieldGemma and three generations of Llama Guard (the original plus versions 2 and 3). Strong guards blocked a good share of attempts.
- Data:
- a refined AdvBench subset (50 instructions)
- Behaviors (120 instructions)
- the new PhishyContent dataset (400 phishing-request prompts), released on Hugging Face along with code on GitHub
- The system prompt has three components: Curbed Capabilities, Program-of-Thought (a
bin_2_texthelper function) and Focus Shifting. Ablations show Curbed Capabilities matters most, so restricting system-prompt access weakens the attack. - An ablated variant still worked on ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Gemini 2.0 Flash and Llama 4 Maverick. The proposed mitigation is perplexity-based screening of system prompts.
