Ground Then Rank: Revisiting Knowledge-Based VQA with Training-Free Entity Identification
Paper · 2026 · Qian Ma, Qiong Wu, Zhengyi Zhou et al.
Summary
Knowledge-based VQA requires facts that the image alone does not show. Multimodal LLMs often fail at it because they must recognise the exact real-world entity and then find the right supporting passage. The authors argue that most MM-RAG pipelines merge these two grounding steps into one costly, trained multimodal re-ranker. They also observe that MLLMs are poor at naming an entity from scratch but much better at picking it from a short list of candidate names, which they liken to a tip-of-the-tongue effect.
Their training-free IBA (Identify Before Answer) pipeline works in three steps:
- It retrieves visually similar Wikipedia pages.
- An MLLM keeps only the high-confidence entities, judged by their names alone.
- An off-the-shelf text re-ranker chooses evidence sections from these entities only.
On Encyclopedic-VQA and InfoSeek, IBA beats fine-tuned multimodal re-ranking baselines with less training and inference cost. The analysis shows the gains come largely from choosing more informative sections, not just from recognising more entities. This suggests lightweight, modular RAG pipelines can compete with trained ones.
Key points
-
Initial retrieval is image-to-image. It uses a frozen EVA-CLIP-8B encoder with a FAISS index and cosine similarity to return the top-K candidate pages.
-
On E-VQA grounded questions, IBA scores 70.5 against 66.4 for EchoSight, even though EchoSight identifies the correct entity slightly more often (77.8% vs. 75.7%).
-
When both systems find the correct entity (59.3% of questions), IBA scores 88.2 against 79.6. When only IBA finds it (13.4%), the scores are 83.6 against 22.8.
-
On the auto-generated E-VQA subset (2,750 questions), the two systems compare as follows:
Metric IBA EchoSight Entity Match 37.1% 39.3% Evidence Hit 33.8% 30.2% -
The approach needs no fine-tuning of the re-ranker or the MLLM, and the code is public (GitHub: VAN-QIAN/ACL26-IBA). Its main limitation is reliance on a fixed external knowledge base.
