SiLP: Enhancing Non-Dominant Language Capabilities with a Selective Bidirectional Language Projection Framework
Paper · 2026 · Junpeng Liu, Jiuyi Li, Kaiyu Huang et al.
Summary
Large language models handle English and other dominant languages much better than under-represented ones because their pretraining data is skewed. Earlier alignment methods close this gap by adding training objectives or extra language-specific modules, which makes training more complex and costly. SiLP uses only the model's existing weights. First, the authors probe the model with translation and measure how much FFN neuron activations shift between neighbouring layers. They then pick the most sensitive layers separately in the lower and upper halves of the network. Next, parallel data is used to tune these layers in sequence. The lower layers learn to map non-dominant inputs toward the dominant-language space, and the upper layers learn to map back to the target language before output. Finally, the model receives instruction tuning in the target language. On LLaMA3-8B and Qwen2.5-7B, across seven NLU/NLG benchmarks, SiLP beats strong baselines. It also needs little parallel data and transfers to other languages, model families and model sizes.
Key points
- Best result: SiLP raises average scores over the baselines (SFT, TFT) by as much as +2.85 points. Benchmarks include BELEBELE, XQuAD, XCOPA and XLSUM.
- Layer selection: layers are chosen by the mean absolute change in FFN activations between adjacent layers during translation. This beat both random-layer and all-layer variants.
- Model scale: average gains were +1.17 for LLaMA3.2-3B and +0.83 for the 13B LLaMA model. For Qwen2.5, gains were +0.74 (0.5B), +0.47 (1.5B) and +1.24 (14B).
- French as the dominant language: the authors built 1k parallel pairs from the Flores devtest. NLU on LLaMA3-8B rose from 61.03 to 63.58, while Qwen2.5-7B improved only slightly (73.10 → 73.62).
- Limitations: each model is trained for a single target language, and the largest model tested has 14B parameters. Extremely low-resource languages still lag behind the others.
