MirrorQA: Benchmarking Multimodal LLMs on Mirror-Orientation Reasoning

Paper · 2026 · Jingping Liu, Xingchen Peng, Yan Zhou et al.

Summary

Multimodal LLMs often confuse left and right when a question concerns a person's or animal's own body. They tend to answer from the viewer's side of the image rather than the subject's. Existing spatial benchmarks (e.g., EmbSpatial-Bench, VSR) define directions from the camera's viewpoint, and pose datasets like COCO Keypoints only localize joints, so neither tests this skill. The authors build MirrorQA, a manually labeled multiple-choice VQA benchmark. Each image comes with a question about which side a body part is on, with 2 or 4 answer options. Questions must be answerable only from visual evidence, left/right answers are balanced, and labels pass annotation, checking and final review. The authors test open models (Llava, Qwen2.5-VL, InternVL3), both as released and with LoRA tuning, and closed models (ChatGPT-5, Gemini-2.5-Pro). The strongest systems reach only about 61–65% accuracy, while humans reach 99.28%. Reference-frame confusion is the main failure. The gap matters for domains such as medical imaging, where sides must be judged relative to the patient.

Key points

  • MirrorQA has 5,549 samples (3,629 human, 1,920 animal) split roughly 7:1:2 into train/dev/test. It covers 28 human activity categories and 43 animal species.
  • Images were filtered from a 20,000-image pool drawn from COCO2017, UTKFace, LSP, 70 Sports, AP-10K and Animals-10. Answers come from the set {left, right, left/right front, left/right rear}.
  • A six-person team (3 annotators, 2 checkers, 1 final reviewer) produced the labels. The resource is released under CC BY 4.0.
  • The best results are 65.40% for a LoRA-fine-tuned 7B open model and 61% for Gemini-2.5-Pro. Scale alone does not help: InternVL3-38B scores below InternVL3-14B.
  • The error analysis of Llava-v1.6-7B and Gemini-2.5-Pro defines three error types:
    • Reference Frame Confusion causes 51.28% and 55.13% of errors, respectively.
    • Body Part Misidentification causes about 33%.
    • Obstacle Occlusion Interference causes about 13%.
