Learning to Control Summaries with Score Ranking
Paper · 2026 · Hongye Liu, Liang Ding and Ricardo Henao
Summary
Summarizers are usually tuned to improve several quality criteria at once. They rarely let a user choose which criterion to favour, even though completeness and conciseness pull against each other within a limited length budget. The authors present a ranking-based training framework that uses fine-grained scores from FineSurE as a black-box judge. It has three parts:
- a margin-ranking loss that orders the model's log-likelihoods over K sampled candidates to match their quality scores;
- a maximum-scoring loss that pushes the top prediction toward the best-scoring candidate;
- a control loss that, given a prompt asking for a more complete (Com↑), more concise (Con↑) or balanced (Bal) summary, shifts the ratio between the two scores.
LoRA adapters were trained on LLaMA, Qwen and Mistral. They were tested in-domain and out-of-domain. The tuned models reach quality comparable to strong summarizers while following the requested dimension. A human study confirms this alignment. Unlike PPO or GRPO, the method needs no reference model, so training is cheaper. This makes steerable summarization more practical with open models.
Key points
- Datasets: in-domain evaluation used WikiHow, CNN/DM and DialogSum. Out-of-domain evaluation used OpoSum (product reviews) and MeQSum (medical).
- Metrics: the authors report the harmonic mean of completeness and conciseness, HM(Ỹ), and a controllability measure, R(Ỹ). The baseline SummLLaMA scores high on HM but shows negative R under Com↑ and Bal, meaning it stays overly concise. Commercial models still lead overall.
- Human evaluation:
- inter-annotator agreement κ = 0.64 ± 0.18;
- accuracy of the model's pseudo-labels against human preferences 0.85 ± 0.18;
- Spearman ρ = 0.724 ± 0.22.
- Robustness checks: to guard against reward hacking, the models were also scored with G-Eval+, G-Eval, ROUGE and BERTScore. Gains on ROUGE and BERTScore were smaller. Faithfulness stays high, and the approach also extends to a completeness–faithfulness pairing.
- Limitations: the method depends on FineSurE as an imperfect proxy and needs extra compute to sample K candidates. It has only been validated on two quality dimensions.
