AdvancedIF: Rubric-Based Benchmarking and Reinforcement Learning for Advancing LLM Instruction Following

Paper · 2026 · Yun He, Wenzhe Li, Hejia Zhang et al.

Summary

LLMs still struggle with demanding instruction following (IF): prompts with many stacked constraints, instructions carried across long conversations, and directives in system prompts. Progress is limited by two gaps: benchmarks rarely use human-made prompts and grading criteria, and RL lacks dependable, interpretable rewards for IF. The authors address both. First, they release AdvancedIF, a benchmark of 1,645 prompts whose prompts and rubrics are all written and reviewed by experts. It covers three categories: complex single-turn IF, multi-turn carried context, and system prompt steerability. Second, they propose RIFL, a post-training pipeline with three parts: a rubric generator trained on a small expert-written set, an LLM judge fine-tuned as a rubric verifier using human-annotated evaluations, and extra shaping criteria that discourage reward hacking. Applied to Llama 4 Maverick, RIFL raises the AdvancedIF average by 6.7 points and also improves MultiChallenge, IFEval and Arena Hard. The work shows that rubrics can serve both as an evaluation tool and as a training signal for complex IF.

Key points

  • AdvancedIF has 402 complex-IF dialogs, 736 carried-context dialogs (about 7.7 turns on average) and 507 system-steerability dialogs (about 11.2 turns), with roughly 6–10 rubric criteria per dialog.
  • On AdvancedIF, frontier models such as GPT5, Gemini 2.5 Pro and Claude-4-Sonnet reach only about 70% at best.
  • RIFL on Llama 4 Maverick improves AdvancedIF scores as follows:
    • CIF: 60.7 → 66.4
    • CC: 51.0 → 56.4
    • SS: 42.4 → 51.5
    • Average: 51.4 → 58.1
  • On other benchmarks, RIFL moves MultiChallenge from 37.4 to 40.3, IFEval from 89.9 to 90.0, and Arena Hard from 84.8 to 88.8 (v0.1) and from 30.9 to 31.7 (v2.0).
  • Ablations show the strict all-or-nothing reward works best (58.1), ahead of the hybrid (55.7) and fractional (53.6) rewards. The fine-tuned verifier and the anti-hacking criteria curb exploits such as overlong or artifact-laden responses.
