Scaling Reasoning, Losing Control: Evaluating Instruction Following in Large Reasoning Models
Paper · 2026 · Tingchen Fu, Yafu Li, Jiawei Gu et al.
Summary
Large reasoning models (LRMs) excel at hard math but often ignore simple user directives. Existing instruction-following benchmarks such as IFEval and FollowBench rely on easy queries that trigger little reasoning, so they do not reflect how LRMs are actually used. To address this, the authors built MathIF, a math-only testbed. It attaches automatically checkable constraints to problems of varying difficulty. The constraints cover length, lexical, format and affix requirements. They are applied singly or in combinations of two or three, and they target only the final answer that follows the thinking segment.
Across 26 LRMs, adherence to constraints was poor. It got worse on harder problems and with more constraints, and model size did not predict it. Training aimed at reasoning (SFT, RL such as GRPO) and longer chains-of-thought raised problem-solving accuracy but lowered compliance. Shortening reasoning, or restating the constraint at the end of the chain-of-thought, improved obedience but cost accuracy. The work shows a trade-off between intelligence and controllability and argues that LRM training needs to account for instructions.
Key points
- MathIF has 420 samples drawn from GSM8K, MATH500, Minerva, Olympiad and AIME. It uses 15 Python-verifiable constraints in four categories, split evenly into 140 single-, 140 double- and 140 triple-constraint queries.
- The best open model, Qwen3-14B, satisfied all constraints in only 50.71% of cases (strict compliance).
- On math, DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B and Qwen3-32B produced about 10× longer reasoning than on IFEval/FollowBench, and Open-Reasoner-Zero-7B about 2× longer. This motivated a dedicated math benchmark.
- The authors tested a "repeat" intervention: appending "Wait" and then restating the constraint before the answer. For Qwen3-32B, it raised HAcc from 43.81 to 59.29 and SAcc from 62.82 to 68.34, but correctness fell from 70.00 to 63.81.
- Limitations: only text-modality models were tested, RL experiments mostly used GRPO, and constraints requiring human judgment were excluded.
