LongDocURL: a Comprehensive Multimodal Long Document Benchmark Integrating Understanding, Reasoning, and Locating
Paper · 2025 · Chao Deng, Jiale Yuan, Pi Bu et al.
Summary
Evaluation of document understanding has not kept pace with large vision-language models (LVLMs). Standard datasets such as DocVQA cover only single pages and are close to saturated. Multi-page sets like MP-DocVQA and DUDE stay under 20 pages and rarely test how models connect different layout elements.
LongDocURL fills this gap with a benchmark built on three task families: Understanding, numerical Reasoning, and cross-element Locating. These are split into 20 sub-tasks by task type and by the kind of answer evidence (text, layout, figure, table; single- or multi-page). The data comes from a semi-automated pipeline. Long, layout-rich documents are selected and filtered, GPT-4o drafts question–answer pairs with evidence through iterative prompting, and the results pass automatic and then manual checks.
Across 26 model and input configurations, GPT-4o leads with 64.5, while the strongest open-source model reaches only 30.6. This shows a large gap in long-document comprehension and points to parsing of layout and table structure as the main weakness.
Key points
- The benchmark has 2,325 QA pairs drawn from more than 33,000 pages, averaging 85.6 pages and about 43.6k text tokens per document. 52.9% of questions need multi-page evidence and 37.1% need cross-element evidence.
- Answer evidence falls into four types: Text, Layout (titles, headers, captions, etc.), Figure, and Table. Locating tasks such as Para-Title Locating require mapping between element types.
- When documents are given as text, Docmind-parsed input beats PyMuPDF input by at least 25 points for proprietary models and about 15 points for open-source ones. This underlines how much table structure matters.
- Among 97 sampled GPT-4o errors, the most common types were:
- perceptual: 32.7%
- inconsistent format: 20.6%
- reasoning: 16.8%
