Seed-Prover: Deep and Broad Reasoning for Automated Theorem Proving
Paper · 2025 · Luoxin Chen, Jinming Gu, Liankai Huang et al.
Summary
Natural-language LLMs reason well on math tasks, but checking their proofs is hard, which limits reinforcement learning for theorem proving. The authors (ByteDance Seed) instead work in Lean, where the compiler confirms every proof. They introduce Seed-Prover, a whole-proof model for Lean 4. It first writes auxiliary lemmas and then assembles the main theorem from them. Proved lemmas are kept in a per-problem lemma pool that different attempts can share. The model also proposes conjectures about useful properties of a problem. It improves its attempts using compiler errors, earlier lemmas and its own summaries. Three test-time budgets (Light, Medium, Heavy) balance depth against breadth of search. Lean has limited geometry support, so they add Seed-Geometry. It pairs a fast C++ forward-chaining engine with a Seed model that proposes auxiliary constructions. The model was trained on 230 million synthesized problems. Together the systems fully proved 5 of 6 IMO 2025 problems, though one proof was finished after the deadline. They also set new records on several formal benchmarks. This shows that formally verified long reasoning can reach olympiad level.
Key points
- On 155 formalized past IMO problems, Seed-Prover proves 121, a 78.1% success rate. Combinatorics is its weakest area, at 7 of 14.
- Benchmark results:
- MiniF2F: 99.6% on both the valid and test splits under Medium. Heavy then solved IMO 1990 P3, the remaining problem in one split.
- PutnamBench: 331 of 657, compared with 86 for Goedel-Prover-V2.
- CombiBench: 30%.
- MiniCTX-v2: 81.8%, compared with 44.3% for o4-mini.
- At IMO 2025, Seed-Geometry solved P2 almost instantly. Seed-Prover proved P5 under Medium, and P3 and P4 under Heavy. Its Heavy proof of P1 came after the July 18 deadline.
- Seed-Geometry solves 43 of the IMO-AG-50 problems, one more than AlphaGeometry 2's 42. Its C++ backend runs about 100 times faster than TongGeometry's Python engine.
- Code and results are published at github.com/ByteDance-Seed/Seed-Prover. The experiments mainly use Lean v4.14.0 with the matching Mathlib.
