About
Profile
Taiwan appears in this library through a small group of research institutions whose scientists wrote more than one of the papers collected on this site. The group mixes kinds of organisation: a national research institute, several universities and the Taiwanese branch of an industrial company. Its members are based in two cities, Taipei and Hsinchu. The country page ranks these institutions by the cited work their researchers produced while affiliated with them. It is one of the national groupings within the library's wider directory of institutions of all kinds.
The picture is deliberately narrow. It reflects only the papers and authors held on this site, not the full research output of Taiwan. An institution appears only when its scientists have contributed more than one paper here. Many organisations active elsewhere may therefore be missing, and those listed are represented by part of their work. Statements below about strength, breadth or citation weight describe each institution's presence among the works in our library, not its standing in any field as a whole.
The institutions
The first entry is Academia Sinica, a research institute in Taipei. It is the only dedicated research institute in the group, and it has a modest set of papers in our library. Their citations are steady but not the largest. Its first place shows that the ranking is not a plain sort by citation totals. The method weighs the cited work of the scientists at each place, and under that measure the institute comes out on top.
Second is National Tsing Hua University, a university in Hsinchu. It has only a few papers here, but they are cited much more than Academia Sinica's. That combination of few papers and heavy citation is a recurring pattern in the group.
Third is National Taiwan University in Taipei. On this site it has the broadest presence of any Taiwanese institution, with more papers than any other entry and a large body of citations. Measured by breadth, it is the main anchor of Taiwanese research among the works here. Its place in the middle of the ranking again shows that the ordering does not follow volume or raw citations alone.
Fourth is Robert Bosch (Taiwan), a company based in Taipei and the only corporate entry. Its papers here are few, but their combined citations are the highest of any Taiwanese institution on this site. That makes it the clearest case of a narrow but heavily cited presence. Industrial research labs often publish a small number of papers that are taken up widely, and this entry fits that pattern among the works here.
The last entry is National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, a university in Hsinchu. It also has few papers in our library, and they carry the lightest citation weight in the group. Its inclusion still marks it as an institution with repeated contributions to the collection rather than a single appearance.
Research strengths
The country listing does not divide its institutions by topic, and no subject areas or descriptions of individual works are attached to it. The fields behind these papers cannot be named from the country page alone. Readers who want to know what each institution actually works on should go to the individual institution pages, which hold the works, authors and themes of each organisation.
What the country page does show is the shape of the research activity. On this site, Taiwanese research rests mainly on universities, which make up most of the list, together with one national research institute and one company. Among the universities, National Taiwan University leads in breadth, while National Tsing Hua University stands out for strong citation of a small set of papers. The company entry, Robert Bosch (Taiwan), carries the most citations of all. Much of the citation weight attached to Taiwan on this site therefore comes from industrial research, not only from academic institutions.
A second pattern is the gap between quantity and impact. The institution with the most papers here is not the most cited, and the most cited has very few papers. Two universities with similarly small sets of papers, National Tsing Hua University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, differ sharply in how often those papers are cited. Taiwanese contributions on this site thus range from a few highly influential papers to wider bodies of steadily cited work.
Geography
The institutions cluster in two cities. Taipei hosts Academia Sinica, National Taiwan University and Robert Bosch (Taiwan), so the national research institute, the broadest university presence and the most cited company work are all in the capital. Hsinchu hosts National Tsing Hua University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, both universities.
Seen this way, Taipei holds the largest share of the Taiwanese presence on this site, whether measured by number of institutions, breadth of papers or citations. Hsinchu still contributes, mainly through National Tsing Hua University, whose small set of papers is cited well beyond its size. The country page alone does not say whether institutions in the two cities work together.
Reading the ranking
The ranking needs some care. Institutions are ordered by the cited work their scientists did there. This is not the same as sorting by paper count or by total citations, and the order on the page differs from both. Academia Sinica is first even though other institutions have more papers or more citations. National Taiwan University, the broadest, sits in the middle. Robert Bosch (Taiwan), the most cited, is fourth.
The ordering is best read as one particular measure of how much cited research each institution's scientists contributed to the collection, not as a ranking of the institutions themselves. It follows only the works in our library, so it will shift as the library grows: new papers by Taiwanese researchers may move institutions up or down, and organisations not yet listed may join once they reach the threshold of more than one paper.
The ranking also says nothing about the size, funding or wider reputation of any of these organisations. A university with a small presence here may be very active in fields the library covers less. A company with a large citation total here may owe it to a small number of widely used papers. The country page describes how these institutions appear on this site and nothing more.
Using this page
The Taiwan page works best as a starting point. Each institution's own page holds what the country summary leaves out: the scientists who wrote the papers, the works and their citations, and the topics and units. Readers interested in Taiwanese university research will find the most material under National Taiwan University. Readers looking for the most cited Taiwanese work in our library should start with Robert Bosch (Taiwan) and National Tsing Hua University. Those interested in research institutes rather than universities should turn to Academia Sinica, and those following research in Hsinchu will find two universities there.
Together, these entries show Taiwanese research on this site as concentrated in a handful of organisations across two cities. Academic institutions provide most of the breadth, and an industrial lab and a few university papers provide much of the citation weight.
