About

Profile

This entry gathers the research institutions in Israel whose scientists have contributed to the papers held on this site. An institution is included once its researchers have written at least two of the papers here. The list therefore reflects the works the library holds, not the whole of Israeli science, and an institution's place on it shows only its share of the cited research on this site.

The group is broad. It includes large universities, smaller colleges and institutes of technology, research institutes, and the Israeli branches of several technology companies. The order follows the cited work that scientists carried out while at each institution. For readers who want to compare Israel with other countries or with other kinds of organisation, the wider directory of institutions covers every kind the library tracks.

The shape of the list

The most visible feature of the Israeli list is its mix of academic and corporate research. A company, Meta (Israel), based in Tel Aviv, is listed first. It is followed by universities: Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv University, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba. Further down, other companies and research institutes appear among the universities rather than in a separate block.

The order is not simply a count of papers or a total of citations. Bar-Ilan University has the largest body of works among the Israeli institutions here, yet it comes second, after Meta (Israel), which has far fewer works but a heavier weight of cited research. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has more works and more citations than the Technion, but the Technion is placed above it. The Weizmann Institute of Science has a small set of works with a sizeable citation total, and it sits in the middle of the list. These differences show that the ranking credits the cited work that scientists did while at a given institution. A paper written jointly by people from several places, or by someone who later moved, does not count fully for each institution it touches.

Universities

Most institutions on the list are universities, and they range widely in size on this site. Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan contributes the most works, and its citation total is second only to Meta (Israel). Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem each have a substantial body of works with a large citation total. The Technion in Haifa has fewer works than either of them but ranks above the Hebrew University. Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba has a body of works comparable in size to Meta (Israel)'s, but a much smaller citation total.

A second group of universities has fewer works in our library but still a clear presence. The Open University of Israel, based in Raanana, has a modest set of works with a relatively strong citation total. The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot is classed here as a university. It has even fewer works, but they are well cited, and its citation total is above that of several institutions listed ahead of it. The University of Haifa has more works than the Technion on this site but a much lower citation total, which places it lower in the order. Ariel University, in Ariel, contributes a small set of works with a moderate citation total.

The smaller institutions come at the end of the list. These include the Jerusalem College of Technology and Reichman University in Herzliya. Also here are the Sami Shamoon College of Engineering in Beersheba and the College of Management Academic Studies in Rishon LeZiyyon. The Holon Institute of Technology in Holon closes the list. The Jerusalem College of Technology has more works than some institutions placed above it, but they are cited less often. Reichman University, Sami Shamoon College of Engineering, the College of Management Academic Studies and the Holon Institute of Technology each have only a few works and a light citation record so far. They are on the list because their researchers passed the threshold of two papers.

Companies

Israel's list is unusual in how prominent industrial research is within it. Meta (Israel) in Tel Aviv leads the whole list. Among the Israeli institutions here, it has the largest citation total from a fairly small set of works. That pattern points to a few heavily cited papers rather than a broad output.

Apple (Israel), based in Herzliya, shows a similar pattern on a smaller scale. A handful of works with a notable citation total places it seventh, ahead of several universities with many more papers. Intel (Israel), listed with Kiryat Gat as its location, has more works in our library than Apple (Israel) but a lower citation total. It sits in the lower half of the list.

Across these companies, the weight of cited research does not depend on volume. One institution can rank high with few works, while another with more papers ranks lower. The entries do not say which subjects these companies work on. Readers who want that detail should follow each company's own entry.

Research institutes

Two bodies on the list are classed as research institutes rather than universities or companies. IBM Research - Haifa is an industrial research laboratory in Haifa. It has only the minimum number of works needed to appear, but they carry a considerable citation total, which places it tenth. The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies in Jerusalem also has a small set of works, with a more modest citation total.

Both cases show how a few papers can give an institution a place on the list when they are well cited. The difference between the two also reflects the kinds of research hosted on this site. The industrial laboratory in Haifa has drawn more citations than the institute of advanced study in Jerusalem.

Geography

The institutions cluster in a few regions. The coastal area around Tel Aviv is the densest. Meta (Israel) and Tel Aviv University are in Tel Aviv itself. Bar-Ilan University is in Ramat Gan, the Holon Institute of Technology in Holon, and the College of Management Academic Studies in Rishon LeZiyyon. A little to the north, Herzliya hosts both Apple (Israel) and Reichman University, and the Open University of Israel is in Raanana. Rehovot, home to the Weizmann Institute of Science, lies to the south of this belt.

Haifa, in the north, forms a second centre. It is home to the Technion, the University of Haifa and IBM Research - Haifa, a mix of a technological university, a general university and an industrial laboratory.

Jerusalem is a third centre. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies and the Jerusalem College of Technology all appear on the list.

In the south, Beersheba hosts Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the Sami Shamoon College of Engineering. Kiryat Gat is the location given for Intel (Israel). Ariel University completes the picture of where Israeli research on this site is done.

Patterns across the list

Several patterns emerge from reading the list as a whole. First, the total weight of cited research is concentrated near the top. The leading company and the largest universities account for most of it, while the smaller colleges at the end contribute only a little so far.

Second, the number of works and the weight of citations often diverge. Bar-Ilan University and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev both have broad sets of papers in our library. Meta (Israel), Apple (Israel), IBM Research - Haifa and the Weizmann Institute of Science reach their positions through fewer, more heavily cited papers.

Third, industrial and academic research are interleaved. Companies appear near the top, in the middle and in the lower half, mixed among the universities. On this site, research from Israeli company branches is as much a part of the national picture as university research.

Scope and limits

The list describes only the papers held in this library and the institutions their authors belonged to. It does not cover all research done in Israel. It also does not show which fields each institution works in, who its scientists are, or which papers are its most cited. That detail lies on the entries for the individual universities, companies and institutes linked above.

Readers who want to know what a particular institution studies should follow its link. The Israel-level view is best read as a map of where cited research on this site has come from, not as a ranking of the institutions themselves. As the library adds papers, new institutions may pass the two-paper threshold and the order may change.
