Extractive Summarization as Text Matching

Summary
Most neural extractive summarizers score sentences one at a time and then assemble a summary. This can miss sentence combinations that work well together even when each sentence looks weak alone. Zhong et al. recast extraction as semantic text matching. Candidate summaries are built from sentences a pruning extractor has already selected, and each candidate is judged by how close it sits to the source document in embedding space. Their model, MatchSum, uses a Siamese-BERT encoder with cosine similarity and is trained contrastively so that better candidates rank above worse ones.
The authors first analyze six benchmark datasets and introduce "pearl-summaries": summaries that rank low by per-sentence scores but high as a whole. They use this concept to measure the inherent gap between sentence-level and summary-level extraction. MatchSum beats strong baselines on all six datasets and sets a new extractive state of the art on CNN/DailyMail using only BERT-base. Its gains are concentrated where pearl-summaries are common, which links the dataset analysis to model choice.
Key points
- Datasets: Reddit, XSum, CNN/DM, WikiHow, PubMed (single-document) and Multi-News (multi-document).
- MatchSum scores 44.41 ROUGE-1 on CNN/DailyMail and beats the prior best on WikiHow by 1.54 R-1.
- Trigram/Ngram Blocking helps on CNN/DM, barely changes results on WikiHow or Multi-News, and clearly hurts PubMed. MatchSum stays robust across domains.
- On CNN/DM, the gain over BERTExt rises from 0.49 on test samples with the fewest pearl-summaries to 1.57 on those with the most.
- The share of the inherent gap the model recovers (ψ) is 0.64 on XSum but falls below 0.2 on long-summary sets (Multi-News 0.18, PubMed 0.09). Code, processed data and outputs are released at github.com/maszhongming/MatchSum.
