IndicTrans2: Towards High-Quality and Accessible Machine Translation Models for all 22 Scheduled Indian Languages
Written for the Research library (claude-opus-5-5) from the paper text. Original — arxiv.org/pdf/2305.16307
Summary
India's 22 scheduled languages have been poorly served by machine translation. Before this work, no public parallel data covered all of them, no benchmark spanned all 22 with India-relevant material, and no open or commercial model supported the full set. The authors address this on four fronts: training data, evaluation, modeling, and open release.
They assemble the Bharat Parallel Corpus Collection (BPCC). It combines newly commissioned human translations, filtered existing bitext, freshly mined pairs from monolingual and document-aligned sources, and large-scale back-translation. They also build IN22, an n-way parallel test set whose English sources come from Indian-themed articles and everyday conversations.
On this basis they train IndicTrans2, a multilingual model covering all 22 languages. It performs on par with or better than NLLB and the commercial systems from Google and Microsoft, both on existing benchmarks such as FLORES and on the new ones. Models, data and code are released under permissive licenses, unlike NLLB's non-commercial terms. This makes the work deployable in public services and gives Indic MT research a shared foundation.
Key points
- BPCC: about 230M bitext pairs, roughly 126M of them new. It includes 644K human-translated En-X pairs across all 22 languages, 7 of which previously had no manually created parallel data.
- BPCC sources:
- Samanantar and NLLB pairs, re-filtered with LaBSE cosine-similarity thresholds.
- New pairs mined from archive.org, IndicCorp v2, NPTEL, UGCResources and Prabhupada Vani.
- Around 800M back-translated sentences.
- IN22 benchmark: IN22-Gen covers 13 domains (e.g., Legal, Health, Tourism) from India-specific articles. IN22-Conv covers conversational text in 16 domains, written by in-house experts from prompts.
- Model variants: IndicTrans2-M2M translates directly among all Indic pairs (462 directions). IndicTrans2-Dist has about 211M parameters, roughly a fifth of the full model's size, with comparable quality.
- Evaluation and release: models are assessed with chrF++, COMET and human judgments. Everything is published at github.com/AI4Bharat/IndicTrans2.
