EIFBENCH: Extremely Complex Instruction Following Benchmark for Large Language Models

Paper · 2025 · Tao Zou, Xinghua Zhang, Haiyang Yu et al.

Summary

Most instruction-following benchmarks test either one task with several constraints or several tasks with one constraint each. Real agent-style workflows usually combine many tasks and many requirements at once. EIFBENCH, from Tongyi Lab at Alibaba, fills this gap with multi-instruction, multi-constraint (MIMC) test items.

The items come from three source types: plain text, dyadic dialogue and multi-party dialogue. Each item packs dozens of constraints spread across several tasks, and those tasks can be arranged in parallel, serial, conditional or nested modes. The data was built with LLM-assisted task and constraint expansion followed by quality filtering. Responses are scored by GPT-4o-as-judge, and the authors checked the judge against human annotators.

They tested 20 open- and closed-source LLMs. Almost none could satisfy every constraint in an item. The authors also propose Segment Policy Optimization (SegPO), a reinforcement-learning method that estimates advantages separately for each instruction's segment of the output. SegPO gives clear gains over both the base model and GRPO.

The work matters because it shows how far current models remain from reliably running complex, constraint-heavy workflows.

Key points

  • Scale of complexity: each item averages 8.24 instructions and 74.01 constraints. Earlier benchmarks such as CFBench, ComplexBench and SIFo stay at roughly 1–4 of each.
  • Taxonomies: there are 8 task categories, including classification, information extraction, dialogue systems, reasoning and programming. Constraints follow a two-level hierarchy under 4 primary types: Content, Situation, Style and Format.
  • Full constraint satisfaction is close to zero. On dyadic dialogue, the best scores were 0.0044 (gemini-1.5-Pro and DeepSeek-R1), followed by GPT-4o at 0.0022. All other models scored 0.
  • SegPO results: +14.85% over Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct and +3.40% over GRPO-trained models on EIFBENCH.
  • Reliability and limits: agreement between human experts and GPT-4o-as-judge reached a Fleiss' Kappa of about 0.74 (500 constraints per data type). The instructions are mostly in Chinese, which limits multilingual use.
