MEraser: An Effective Fingerprint Erasure Approach for Large Language Models

Paper · 2025 · Jingxuan Zhang, Zhenhua Xu, Rui Hu et al.

Summary

Backdoor-based fingerprinting lets LLM owners prove ownership through secret trigger–response pairs, but little work has tested how easily these marks can be removed. The authors propose MEraser (Mismatched Eraser), a fingerprint removal attack that needs no knowledge of the triggers or target outputs. It is inspired by SEAM, a catastrophic-forgetting approach to blind backdoor unlearning grounded in Neural Tangent Kernel theory. MEraser runs two fine-tuning phases. First, an "erase" phase trains on a mismatched dataset of questions paired with unrelated answers, which breaks the learned trigger–output associations. Second, a "recover" phase on clean data restores general ability. Both phases together use fewer than 1,000 samples. The authors tested MEraser on several LLM architectures and fingerprinting schemes. It deactivated all fingerprints while keeping performance stable, unlike pruning, model merging, Token Forcing and CleanGen. They also package the erasure as a LoRA adapter that transfers across models without retraining. The work exposes weaknesses in current ownership protection and offers a benchmark for building sturdier fingerprints.

Key points

  • Targeted fingerprinting schemes include IF (IF-SFT), UTF and HashChain (HC). These differ in trigger type (rare, under-trained or ordinary tokens) and in how triggers map to outputs.
  • MEraser achieved a 0% fingerprint success rate (FSR) across tested schemes using under 1,000 training samples. The threat model requires keeping over 90% of baseline utility at under 10% of the original training cost.
  • Baselines fell short in specific ways:
    • Random and Taylor pruning at 20% thresholds did not fully erase fingerprints.
    • Model merging removed IF-SFT and UTF but left over 50% of HC fingerprints intact.
    • Token Forcing failed against HC.
    • CleanGen requires an impractical reference model trained on the same data distribution.
  • The transferable LoRA erasure adapter reached 0% FSR in most cases, though UTF retained 37.5%.
  • The authors note that training-based watermarks may also be affected, while inference-time text watermarking such as KGW likely is not.
