ERNIE-ViLG: Unified Generative Pre-training for Bidirectional Vision-Language Generation
Paper · 2021 · Han Zhang, Weichong Yin, Yewei Fang et al.
Summary
Image captioning and text-to-image synthesis are two directions of the same mapping between vision and language, yet they have usually been handled by separate, task-specific architectures. ERNIE-ViLG, from Baidu, handles both inside one shared transformer. Images are converted into discrete token sequences by a vector-quantization autoencoder. The model then produces either text from image tokens or image tokens from text, autoregressively in both cases. The authors also propose training the token generator jointly with the image reconstructor, instead of the usual two-stage pipeline with separately trained parts. They scaled the approach to 10 billion parameters and trained it on 145 million Chinese image-text pairs. The model reports an FID of 7.9 on MS-COCO for image synthesis and leading captioning scores on COCO-CN and AIC-ICC. It also performs strongly on generative VQA. The work matters because it shows that large-scale pre-training can benefit both generation directions at once, especially image synthesis, where large pre-trained models had been scarce.
Key points
- Scale and data: the 10B-parameter ERNIE-ViLG was pre-trained on 145M Chinese image-text pairs. It reached an FID of 7.9 on MS-COCO and state-of-the-art captioning results on COCO-CN and AIC-ICC.
- End-to-end ablation setup: the authors tested joint training on a smaller generator of about 300M parameters (24 layers, hidden size 1024, 16 heads). This version used dVAE tokens, was trained on CC plus CC12M, and was evaluated zero-shot on MS-COCO.
- End-to-end results: FID improved from 41.4 to 39.9 compared with the two-stage pipeline. With gold image token sequences, the jointly trained reconstructor scored 18.6 versus 21.7.
- Generative VQA: on 200 FMIQA validation samples, ERNIE-ViLG passed the human Turing Test 78.5% of the time, compared with 64.7% for mQA. Its average answer-quality score was 1.495 on a 0–2 scale.
- Limitation: the released 10B model, which uses VQGAN tokens, was not trained end-to-end because of training instability. The authors leave this for future work.
