CBLUE: A Chinese Biomedical Language Understanding Evaluation Benchmark

Paper · 2021 · Ningyu Zhang, Mosha Chen, Zhen Bi et al.

Summary

Biomedical NLP evaluation resources such as BLURB and PubMedQA are almost entirely English. Chinese, spoken by roughly a quarter of humanity, has had no shared yardstick for medical language understanding. The authors address this with CBLUE, which they describe as the first Chinese benchmark of its kind. It combines eight tasks at the token, single-sentence and sentence-pair levels: entity and relation extraction, diagnosis normalization, clinical-trial criteria classification, query intent detection, semantic similarity and search relevance.

The data come from real-world sources, including trial registries, hospital EHRs, medical forums, textbooks and search engine logs. All of it was anonymized and reviewed by IRB committees, then annotated by physicians from top-tier hospitals. Compared with CLUE or BLURB, CBLUE adds long-tailed label distributions and a non-i.i.d. transfer scenario.

Baselines with 11 Chinese pre-trained models remain well below human performance. Case studies trace errors to specialized terminology, colloquial wording and polysemy. The domain-pretrained PCL-MedBERT sometimes succeeds where general models fail. The datasets, an online evaluation platform and baseline code are publicly released.

Key points

  • Eight datasets: CMeEE, CMeIE, CHIP-CDN, CHIP-STS, CHIP-CTC, KUAKE-QIC, KUAKE-QTR and KUAKE-QQR. They are scored with Micro F1, Macro F1 or Accuracy, depending on the task.
  • CMeEE has 9 entity types and 15,000/5,000/3,000 train/dev/test examples. CMeIE defines 53 relations, and CHIP-CTC covers 44 eligibility-criteria classes taken from ChiCTR.
  • CHIP-CDN maps raw diagnoses to ICD-10 (Beijing Clinical Edition v601). KUAKE-QIC has 11 search-query intent categories.
  • CHIP-STS covers questions about 5 diseases, and the training and test sets deliberately use different diseases to test cross-disease generalization.
  • 11 Chinese pre-trained language models were evaluated, and all fall far short of the human ceiling. The benchmark is released under CC BY-NC 4.0, with code on GitHub (CBLUEbenchmark/CBLUE).
