Marco-Bench-MIF: On Multilingual Instruction-Following Capability of Large Language

Paper · 2025 · Bo Zeng, Chenyang Lyu, Sinuo Liu et al.

Summary

Most benchmarks for LLM instruction following are English-only or plain machine translations, so they handle constraints that don't transfer across languages poorly. Examples include uppercase rules for scripts without letter case, passive voice in Japanese or Turkish, and culturally foreign references. The authors build Marco-Bench-MIF, a localized multilingual extension of IFEval covering 30 languages from six language families, including Ukrainian. Each language has 541 items.

The pipeline has three stages. First, the English prompts are sorted by constraint cardinality and type and filtered. Second, the prompts are translated with Google Translate, corrected by professional translators and checked with LLMs. Third, the prompts are culturally localized through lexical substitution, topical transposition and pragmatic restructuring, and a panel of three LLMs votes on the localized outputs.

The authors evaluate more than 20 LLMs. The results show large gaps between high- and low-resource languages, strong effects of model scale, and recurring failures with formatting and combined constraints. Machine-translated test data consistently underestimates model ability. The work argues that multilingual evaluation should be culturally grounded rather than translation-based.

Key points

  • Dataset structure: 30 languages × 541 instruction items. The English source is split by cardinality into single-constraint (49.9%) and multi-constraint (50.1%) items, and by type into expressive (format) and content constraints.
  • Parallel variants: Arabic, Spanish, Malay, Yoruba and Chinese each have both a machine-translated and a localized version. Comparing them shows that MT data underestimates accuracy by 7–22%.
  • Resource gap: High-resource languages such as de and zh reach about 75–85% accuracy, while low-resource ones such as yo and ne reach about 50–60%. Arabic shows script-specific difficulties.
  • Model scale: 70B+ models score 45–60% higher than 8B models. Qwen2.5-7B still reaches 64.42% strict instruction-level accuracy. Instruction-level accuracy exceeds prompt-level accuracy by 10–20%.
  • Proprietary vs. open models: GPT-4o and Claude3.5-Sonnet lead open models, with a 25–35% gap on low-resource languages. In case studies, Aya-expanse-32B held the requested output language where GPT-4o did not.
