LeCoDe: A Benchmark Dataset for Interactive Legal Consultation Dialogue Evaluation
Paper · 2026 · Weikang Yuan, Kaisong Song, Zhuoren Jiang et al.
Summary
LeCoDe addresses the difficulty of evaluating LLMs as legal consultants. Real consultations involve users with little legal knowledge who give vague, incomplete descriptions, so a competent expert must ask targeted follow-up questions before giving advice. Prior resources are mostly single-turn QA pairs or LLM-generated dialogues, and their evaluations rarely measure clarification skill. The authors collected public Chinese legal consultation content from short-video platforms and converted it into de-identified, structured multi-turn dialogues. Experts annotated each case with the initial query, atomic key facts, the importance of each fact, and a summary of the advice. They also built an evaluation framework in which an LLM-simulated client interacts with the model under test. The framework scores clarification (effectiveness and efficiency) and advice quality using automated metrics and an LLM judge. Strong models still struggled, with GPT-4 recalling only about a third of key facts. Fine-tuning on dialogues built around key facts helped but left a large gap. The benchmark offers a realistic testbed for interactive legal AI.
Key points
- Dataset size: LeCoDe has 3,696 consultation cases and 110,008 dialogue turns, all drawn from Chinese legal consultation videos and released only as anonymized text. Access is limited to verified academic researchers who sign a data use agreement.
- Evaluation framework: 12 metrics are grouped into two dimensions, Clarification Capability and Advice Quality.
- Clarification results: Key-fact recall reached only 39.8% for Qwen-max and 35.9% for GPT-4.
- Advice quality results: Overall scores were about 62% for Deepseek and 59.1% for GPT-4. The paper's text gives about 58% for GPT-4 in one place.
- Mitigation strategies: Prompting-based fixes often made results worse. Key-fact SFT outperformed Direct SFT. The Key-fact-e variant gained +59.2% WR, +12.7% BS and +30.1% OA while using fewer turns.
