AfriqueLLM: How Data Mixing and Model Architecture Impact Continued Pre-training for African Languages

Paper · 2026 · Hao Yu, Tianyi Xu, Michael A. Hedderich et al.

Summary

Open LLMs still trail proprietary systems on African languages. Continued pre-training (CPT) helps, but it rarely lifts harder skills like math reasoning, partly because low-resource corpora cover few domains. The authors build AfriqueLLM, a family of open models that use CPT over a 26B-token corpus to target 20 African languages. The corpus draws on FineWeb2, WURA and MADLAD-400, with four high-resource languages added to limit forgetting. They apply this CPT to Llama 3.1, Gemma 3 and Qwen 3 backbones of different sizes and vary the data mixture, adding code, math, synthetic machine-translated text and parallel data. The mixture turns out to be the main source of gains, with code, math and synthetic data helping even on reasoning benchmarks. Model family matters more than parameter count, and a base model's initial multilingual strength is a poor predictor of its results after CPT. The best variants also do well on long-context work such as document-level translation. The findings give a practical recipe for adapting LLMs to under-resourced languages, and the models are released on Huggingface.

Key points

  • Training data: 20 African languages plus English, French, Portuguese and Arabic, each capped at about 1B tokens.
    • UniMax sampling upsamples smaller languages for up to five epochs.
    • Additional sources: about 1B tokens of CornStack-Python, about 1B of FineMath-4+, 324M synthetic translated tokens and 456M NLLB-OPUS parallel tokens.
  • Backbones: Llama 3.1 8B, Gemma 3 (4B, 12B) and Qwen 3 (4B, 8B, 14B). The adapted Qwen 3 8B rivals Gemma 3 12B.
  • Strongest model: AfriqueQwen-14B averages 63.58, beating Gemma 3 27B (60.71) despite being under half its size. It also outperforms the 54B NLLB-MoE on translation.
  • Document-level translation (AfriDocMT), with no exposure to its training data:
    • For eng→xx, AfriqueGemma-12B scores 60.2, versus 47.8 for a task-specific Llama 3.1 SFT baseline.
    • For xx→eng, AfriqueQwen-14B reaches 73.5.
  • Qwen 3 4B: CPT raises its average from 31.49 to 54.94 (+74.4%).
  • Qwen 3.5 4B with an enlarged code and math budget (5B+5B tokens): reaches 58.26, close to AfriqueGemma-12B with roughly a third of the parameters.
