From Curated Data to Scalable Models: Continual Pre-training of Dense and MoE Large Language Models for Tibetan
Paper · 2026 · Lei Yang, Leiyu Pan, Bojian Xiong et al.
Summary
Mainstream LLMs are trained mostly on high-resource languages, so Tibetan remains poorly served despite its millions of speakers and cultural importance. The authors build an end-to-end pipeline to close this gap.
- Data: They assemble a 72 GB cleaned Tibetan corpus, which they describe as the largest so far. It draws on open-source collections, web crawling, synthetic generation and private sources, all processed with a Tibetan-specific cleaning workflow.
- Training: Starting from Qwen2.5-7B, they add frequent Tibetan character combinations to the vocabulary. They then run full-parameter continual pre-training on mixed Tibetan, Chinese and English data, first at short context and then with long-context training. Multilingual instruction tuning follows.
- Scaling: The adapted dense model is upcycled into a 50B-A10B Mixture-of-Experts model.
- Evaluation: Standard Tibetan benchmarks are scarce, so they machine-translate existing ones, have native speakers verify them, and combine them with public Tibetan test sets.
Both dense and MoE models outperform open-source and Tibetan-focused models of similar size. The expanded vocabulary also makes Tibetan inference markedly cheaper. The work offers a reusable recipe for other low-resource languages.
Key points
- The corpus by source, after filtering: open-source 9.53 G, web crawl 4.18 G, synthetic (Tibetan/Chinese/English) 17.46 G, private 41.13 G.
- Dense model training on Qwen2.5-7B-base:
- Stage 1 (4K context) mix: 39% English, 39% Chinese, 22% Tibetan.
- Stage 2 (32K context) mix: 55% English, 12% Chinese, 33% Tibetan.
- Needle-in-a-haystack tests in English and Tibetan confirm the 32K context window works.
- The MoE model (50B-A10B) is upcycled from the Tibetan-adapted dense model. It is trained with a 37/37/26 mix at 4K, then at 8K context.
- SFT data: roughly 480K English, 450K Chinese and 520K Tibetan instruction samples.
- Tokenizer compression on Tibetan is 3.9644 characters per token, versus 0.7315 for Qwen3-8B and 0.4885 for Llama3-8B. Weights, benchmarks and data-processing documentation are planned for release.
