FAQ: Mitigating Quantization Error via Regenerating Calibration Data with Family-Aware Quantization
Paper · 2026 · Haiyang Xiao, Weiqing Li, Jinyue Guo et al.
Summary
Post-training quantization (PTQ) of LLMs relies on a small calibration set. When that set does not reflect the activations the model produces at inference, scales and zero-points are estimated poorly, and outlier-heavy activations make this worse. The authors propose FAQ (Family-Aware Quantization), which leaves the quantizer unchanged and instead rewrites the calibration data.
The original samples go to a larger "elder sibling" model from the same family as the target, which regenerates them as Chain-of-Thought style responses. The candidates then compete within groups under expert guidance, and the winners are normalized before being handed to an ordinary PTQ method. The reasoning is that models sharing a lineage behave similarly internally, so the regenerated text yields smoother, less spiky activations that are easier to quantize.
Combined with GPTQ, AWQ, SPQR and GPTAQ on models including Qwen3-8B and the MoE Qwen3-30B-A3B, FAQ cuts quantization-induced accuracy loss by up to 28.5%. Because it is training-free and plug-in, it points PTQ toward data-centric improvements.
Key points
- FAQ is presented as the first use of model-family priors to build PTQ calibration data. Its pipeline is regeneration by a larger in-family model, CoT guidance, intra-group competition, and normalization.
- The reported gain is up to 28.5% less accuracy degradation than calibrating with the original samples. Evaluation uses perplexity on Wiki2, C4 and Lambada plus GRMC/SDC accuracy.
- A lineage test on the distilled DeepSeek-R1-0528-Qwen3-8B compared two generators:
- Data from the family model Qwen3-235B-A22B (+qw) beat data from the distillation teacher DeepSeek-R1 (+ds).
- The averages were 68.74 vs. 67.84, and Lambada perplexity was 29.37 vs. 31.77.
- Both generators are MoE models, so architecture match does not explain the result.
- On Qwen3-30B-A3B (MoE), averaged FAQ results improved over the baselines:
- Wiki2 perplexity fell from 11.82 to 11.39.
- C4 perplexity fell from 34.40 to 32.42.
- SDC accuracy rose from 71.24 to 71.91.
- Limitations: results depend on prompting and generation settings such as temperature and candidate selection. INT4 shows some instability, including a slight drop on MGSM.
