Beyond Static Toolsets: Self-Evolving LLM Tool Agents via Continual Documentation Adaptation

Paper · 2026 · Bin Wu, Edgar Meij and Emine Yilmaz

Summary

Tool-using LLM agents are usually evaluated and optimized as if their APIs and documentation never change. Real deployments, such as MCP servers, keep adding, modifying and retiring tools. The authors call the resulting tension the stability–adaptation dilemma: an agent must keep solving tasks it could already handle while also learning to use new tools.

Their framework, ContDa, leaves model weights untouched and instead keeps rewriting tool documentation as the toolset changes. It works in two stages:

  • Relation-guided exploration. Functionally similar existing tools serve as anchors for probing queries that check and reveal what new tools can do.
  • Relation-aware adjustment. Overlapping tools are clustered, and their documentation is edited together to state preferences and fallbacks.

For evaluation, the authors build evolving versions of StableToolBench and RestBench and add metrics that separate forgetting from discovery. Across three evolution patterns, ContDa raises average success mainly by finding more new capabilities, with only modest forgetting. This makes documentation adaptation a cheap, retraining-free route to robust tool use.

Key points

  • The setup covers three evolution patterns (expansion-only, reduction, mixture), each run over five evolution steps, on dynamic extensions of StableToolBench and RestBench.
  • Two new metrics, Forget and Discover, measure lost versus newly solved tasks per step, alongside average performance.
  • In the StableToolBench ablation, full ContDa reaches about 19.4 average performance in both the expansion-only and mixture settings, against about 17.3 for unoptimized documentation.
  • Removing either stage hurts:
    • Without adjustment, forgetting rises.
    • Without discovery, performance falls below the unoptimized baseline.
  • Compared with DRAFT, exploration produces more valid, diverse probes and more cumulative solved tasks, and it is robust across the similarity threshold τ. Code: github.com/Bingo-W/ContDa.
