Janus: Decoupling Visual Encoding for Unified Multimodal Understanding and Generation

Paper · 2024 · Chengyue Wu, Xiaokang Chen, Zhiyu Wu et al.

Summary

Unified multimodal models such as Chameleon typically use one visual encoder for both image understanding and image generation. The authors argue that this creates a conflict. Understanding needs abstract semantic features, while generation needs fine-grained spatial and texture detail, and understanding quality tends to suffer. Janus, from DeepSeek-AI, The University of Hong Kong and Peking University, addresses this by giving each task its own visual encoding route while keeping one shared autoregressive transformer. A SigLIP encoder feeds the understanding path, and a discrete VQ tokenizer (borrowed from LlamaGen) feeds the generation path. Each path has its own adaptor that maps features into the LLM's input space, and image tokens are predicted by a separate, newly initialized head. Training proceeds in three stages: adaptors and image head first, then unified pretraining, then supervised fine-tuning. The 1.3B model beats earlier unified models and rivals larger task-specific systems. Because the encoders are decoupled, each task can adopt the best available encoder, and further modalities could be added later.

Key points

  • Architecture: SigLIP for understanding and a VQ tokenizer for generation. Both are joined by one autoregressive transformer that needs no special attention masks.
  • Understanding results for Janus (1.3B): MMBench 69.4, SEED-Bench 63.7 and POPE 87.0. These scores exceed LLaVA-v1.5 (7B) and Qwen-VL-Chat (7B).
  • Generation results: FID 8.53 on MSCOCO-30K and 61% accuracy on GenEval, ahead of DALL-E 2 and SDXL.
  • Multilingual prompting is an emergent ability. The model handles Chinese, French, Japanese and emoji prompts despite English-only text-to-image training data.
  • Images are processed at 384 × 384 resolution, and the code is published at github.com/deepseek-ai/Janus.
