Terms for Occupations, Professions and Social Classes in Ugaritic: An Etymological Study

Summary

Ugaritic has many attested words for jobs, ranks and social groups, but no previous study covered all of them in the alphabetic texts. Earlier work looked at small subsets, such as merchant words, terms with Hebrew parallels, or single titles. Watson fills this gap with a full classified inventory. The entries run roughly from high status (royalty, nobility) to lower groups and miscellaneous trades, and are alphabetised inside each class. Each term comes with its attestations (KTU references), cognates in other Semitic languages, and comparanda from Afro-Asiatic (Egyptian, Chadic), Indo-European (Hittite, Greek) and Hurrian. Further sections cover multi-word expressions, proper names, and syllabic and Ugaritian Akkadian spellings. Everything is gathered in a summary table with statistics on distribution and on source language. The part of the paper supplied here omits the final tables and conclusions, so their numbers are not reported. The work matters because it separates inherited Semitic vocabulary from loanwords, showing how much contact with neighbouring cultures shaped the vocabulary of professions.

Key points

  • Earlier surveys were partial. Yamashita (1975) treated 37 terms with biblical Hebrew equivalents, and Sanmartín (1995a) treated 33 lemmata (32 alphabetic, 1 syllabic). Vita (2018) is the closest parallel, covering labour and job terminology.
  • Professions that appear only in syllabic spelling, with no alphabetic equivalent, are mostly left out for space. They get only a brief treatment in §6.
  • The author admits his ordering is just one possible classification. Ugarit's administrative lists themselves follow no clear system, apart from a few groupings such as khnm, nqdm and qdšm.
  • Example etymologies:
    • ủṯryn "crown prince" is probably a loan, linked to Hurrian ušriani.
    • mlk "king" is Common Semitic and was borrowed into Egyptian.
    • srn "prince" is possibly Indo-European.
    • ảdn "lord" passed into Hurrian.
  • The main reference tools are KTU for text citations and DUL, HALOT, AHw, CAD, CSL and HSED for cognates. Every attestation is listed so that frequency and distribution by text type can be computed.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. Each entry records which way a word was borrowed (Semitic→Egyptian, Hurrian→Akkadian, Semitic→Hurrian) instead of just listing similar words, so direction of influence is explicit. — For Mova (world): Ontology entries pulled from WordNet/Wikidata could carry a provenance field (inherited vs. borrowed, and from where), letting the knowledge layer explain the source of a term's sense.
  • I2. Ranking social roles by status, while openly calling the scheme one choice among many, keeps the taxonomy honest about its arbitrariness. — For Mova (world): Role or occupation hierarchies in the ontology could be marked as conventional orderings rather than facts, so reasoning about rank ("who outranks whom") stays explainable and revisable.
  • I3. Listing every occurrence of a term, not a few examples, turns a lexicon into something that supports distribution statistics by text genre. — For Mova (learn): Keeping full attestation lists for lexicon entries in silver data would allow per-genre frequency checks and catch senses that appear only in one text type.
  • I4. Composite expressions (e.g., title + noun such as "chief of X") get their own section rather than being folded into single-word entries. — For Mova (frames): Multi-word role titles could be handled as single frame fillers with an internal head–modifier structure, so "chief of the merchants" maps to one agent with a role and a domain.
  • I5. Marking an entry as uncertain (e.g., a "(?)" on a gloss) when the evidence is weak keeps confidence visible inside the resource itself. — For Mova (tokens): Lemma and morphology entries could carry an explicit low-confidence flag that downstream stages read, instead of treating every dictionary gloss as equally reliable.
