What Factors Affect LLMs and RLLMs in Financial Question Answering?

Paper · 2026 · Peng Wang, Xuesi Hu, Jiageng Wu et al.

Summary

The paper asks which inference-time techniques actually help general LLMs and reasoning-oriented RLLMs on financial question answering. Prior work has mostly focused on raising scores in this domain rather than understanding what drives them. The authors evaluate five LLMs and four RLLMs on the text-only Basic Txt subset of the FAMMA benchmark, which covers English, Chinese and French. They compare seven methods in three groups: prompting strategies, agentic frameworks and multilingual alignment.

The central finding is that methods which help ordinary LLMs mostly work by lengthening their reasoning, which imitates the Long CoT that RLLMs already produce. Because RLLMs reason at length on their own, these techniques add little for them. Multilingual alignment methods behave the same way: they help LLMs mainly by extending reasoning and give RLLMs minimal benefit.

The authors suggest that further progress for RLLMs will likely require richer agent mechanisms that structure their long outputs. This makes the study a practical guide for choosing techniques for financial QA systems.

Key points

  • Data: FAMMA's Basic Txt subset, in which multimodal content was converted to text with OCR, giving 1,945 evaluation items in English, Chinese and French.
  • Models: The LLMs are Meta-Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct, GPT-4o-mini, Gemini-1.5-flash, Qwen-2.5-32B and DeepSeek-V3. The RLLMs include DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B and Qwen-3-14B, the latter run in both thinking and non-thinking modes.
  • Methods compared:
    • Prompting: Direct, Zero-shot CoT and Plan-and-Solve.
    • Agentic: Self-Refine (one iteration only) and an adapted S3 Agent.
    • Multilingual: Translate-en and Cross-lingual Prompting (CLP).
  • Example gains: For Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct, overall accuracy rose from 16.50 (Direct) to 24.62 (S3 Agent). For GPT-4o-mini, the best result was Plan-and-Solve at 40.46, versus 36.96 with Direct.
  • Error analysis: GPT-4o-mini was used to label errors made by Qwen-3-14B.
    • Without thinking mode, reasoning mistakes dominated, and enabling thinking mode largely reduced them.
    • Roughly one third of LLM errors came from misreading the question or its assumptions.
    • In CLP, aligning to English was often not the best choice of target language, and the optimal target language differed between models.
