RouteMoA: Dynamic Routing without Pre-Inference Boosts Efficient Mixture-of-Agents

Paper · 2026 · Jize Wang, Han Wu, Zhiyuan You et al.

Summary

Mixture-of-Agents (MoA) setups let several LLMs refine each other's answers over multiple layers. Because every model runs at every layer, this is expensive and slow. Sparse MoA adds an LLM judge to filter answers, but all models still have to generate before the judge sees them. Neither approach scales well to pools of more than about ten models. RouteMoA avoids this by deciding which models to call before any of them generate. A small SLM-based scorer reads only the query and gives each model in the pool a rough suitability score, so only a few promising candidates are activated. In later layers, those scores are adjusted using the models' own ratings of their answers and their ratings of each other's answers. This correction needs no extra inference calls. A final ranking step then chooses models by weighing expected quality against price and latency. Across tasks and pool sizes, RouteMoA matches or beats standard MoA while costing much less. This makes collaboration among many LLMs practical even with large and specialized model pools.

Key points

  • With the large-scale model pool, RouteMoA reduces cost by 89.8% and latency by 63.6% relative to MoA. Code is available at github.com/Jize-W/RouteMoA.
  • The scorer has 86M parameters and trains in about 25 minutes on under 50 GB of GPU memory. Its training labels combine ground-truth comparisons with scores from InternLM2-1.8B-Reward. Adding a new LLM requires roughly 4k samples, which typically cost under $4.
  • Selecting the top three models gives the best accuracy (82.88%). In 97.9% of queries, the correct model is already in the initial candidate set, which allows frequent early stopping.
  • The authors examined cases where RouteMoA fails but MoA succeeds. About half (50.46%) come from aggregation drift, where a correct answer gets overridden. Scorer mis-routing accounts for 24.15% and self-assessment bias for 20.12%.
  • The main limitation is that the scorer must be retrained whenever a new LLM joins the pool. The authors list retrain-free routing as future work.
