PlaM: Training-Free Plateau-Guided Model Merging for Better Visual Grounding in MLLMs
Paper · 2026 · Zijing Wang, YongKang Liu, Mingyang Wang et al.
Summary
Multimodal instruction fine-tuning tends to weaken the text reasoning that MLLMs inherit from their base language models. The authors argue this also hurts visual grounding, and they propose PlaM (Plateau-guided model Merging), a fix that needs no training. They first mask vision tokens from a chosen decoder layer onward and sweep that layer through the network. This reveals three stages of visual use. Early layers keep the modalities apart, middle layers align them and gain quickly, and late layers reach a plateau where extra visual access adds little. They link this plateau to degraded language ability. PlaM therefore linearly interpolates base-LM weights, mainly attention projections, into the plateau-phase layers. The vision encoder, the projector and all other layers stay unchanged. Across five MLLMs and nine benchmarks, the merged models consistently beat the originals and alternative merging schemes. Attention analysis shows the merged models attend to task-relevant image regions instead of spreading attention widely. The method matters because it recovers lost capability cheaply, without curated data or architectural changes.
Key points
- Merging formula: W_merged = λ1·W_lm + λ2·W_vlm, with λ in [0, 1.5]. It is applied only to a selected middle-to-late layer range; the remaining layers keep the MLLM weights.
- For Qwen2.5-VL-3B-Instruct, layers 27–36 were merged. Late-layer instruction-to-vision attention mass rose from about 0.1 to 0.3, and LLaVA showed similar gains.
- In a LLaVA-v1.5-7B case study, the original model answered a ring-size comparison question wrongly ("Different"). The merged model focused on the ring contours and answered correctly ("Same").
- Motivating prior evidence: in VideoLLaMA-7B, output tokens attend to text roughly 157× more than to visual tokens.
- Limitation: the merge-position hyperparameter k0 must be tuned per dataset, and only a simple linear merging strategy was explored. Code: github.com/wzj1718/PlaM.
