EvolvR: Self-Evolving Pairwise Reasoning for Story Evaluation to Enhance Generation
Paper · 2026 · Xinda Wang, Zhengxu Hou, Yangshijie Zhang et al.
Summary
LLM judges remain weak at assessing stories. Prompting closed models is brittle, and fine-tuned open evaluators usually output scores without explicit reasoning. The authors propose EvolvR, a framework that teaches an open-source evaluator to reason over pairs of stories. The model works aspect by aspect, for example Surprise or Coherence. First, the model generates its own chain-of-thought rationales from several personas, such as an artist, a scholar and an engineer. Each rationale must end in the known gold scores for the two stories. Next, a set of agents prunes and improves this synthetic data:
- a rule-based score consistency check,
- self-refinement,
- an adversarial "attack" probe,
- a confidence filter.
The evaluator trained on the cleaned data reports state-of-the-art agreement with human ratings on StoryER, HANNA and OpenMEVA. It is then used as a reward model for GRPO training of a story generator, which yields better stories than SFT or a pointwise reward model. The work is relevant because reliable, interpretable story judges are a precondition for applying RLHF to creative writing.
Key points
- Task formulation: given two stories and an aspect, the evaluator produces a rationale plus a pair of scores on a 1–5 scale. The reward used during generation combines relative advantage, absolute quality and a length term.
- Ablation (correlation with human judgments):
- Baseline without agents: Pearson 0.5682, Spearman 0.5591, Kendall 0.5007.
- Full EvolvR: Pearson 0.6155, Spearman 0.6033, Kendall 0.5429.
- Adding any single module (multi-persona, Rule-Check, Refinement, Attack, Confidence) improves on the baseline.
- Generation on Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, EvolvR-guided GRPO vs. Point-RM GRPO:
- Proportion of wins when compared with the base model: 0.6436 for EvolvR-guided GRPO, 0.5611 for Point-RM GRPO.
- Win rate against HANNA human stories: 0.3162 vs. 0.2909.
- Average score: 3.589 vs. 3.541 (base model: 3.464).
- SFT lowered generation quality.
- Human evaluation: 500 stories were rated on six dimensions; the improvements were significant at p < 0.01. Coherence dropped slightly under both RL reward models.
- Limitations:
- Training requires labeled data with a fixed scoring scheme.
- Checking the quality of intermediate CoTs remains expensive.
- Gains from RL are only moderate, which the authors attribute to reward noise.
