MorphMark: Flexible Adaptive Watermarking for Large Language Models
Paper · 2025 · Zongqi Wang, Tianle Gu, Baoyuan Wu et al.
Summary
LLM watermarks based on red-green vocabulary splits, such as KGW, face a tension. A stronger probability boost for green tokens makes the watermark easier to detect and harder to remove, but it also distorts the output and lowers text quality. The authors model this as a multi-objective function. Text quality is measured as the Bhattacharyya Coefficient between the original and watermarked token distributions. Effectiveness is measured as the added green-versus-red probability gap. Both are combined with a weight ω.
Their analysis shows that the best watermark strength depends on P_G, the total probability mass already assigned to green-list tokens. When P_G is low, pushing harder yields little benefit or even net harm. MorphMark therefore treats strength as an adaptive function of P_G rather than a fixed hyperparameter. It needs no training and no auxiliary model, and it works end to end with any LLM.
Experiments indicate a better effectiveness-quality balance than earlier methods, along with good time and memory efficiency. This makes the method practical for deployment as models evolve quickly.
Key points
-
Theorem 1: for any ω > 0, there is an optimal strength r* in (0, 1), and r* increases with P_G. Watermarking should therefore be stronger when green tokens already carry high probability. The authors report that using KL divergence instead of the Bhattacharyya Coefficient leads to the same conclusion.
-
Strength function: MorphMark sets strength with a piecewise rule. Below a threshold p₀, strength is close to zero. Above p₀, strength grows linearly with P_G and is capped just below 1.
-
Low-entropy test on HumanEval with StarCoder2-3B:
Method TPR@1 Best F1 pass@1 No watermark – – 0.2500 SWEET 0.8110 0.8926 0.1890 EWD 0.8537 0.9180 0.2073 MorphMark 0.8780 0.9320 0.2378 MorphMark + EWD detection 0.9207 0.9557 0.2378 -
Combination with EWD: using MorphMark for generation and EWD for detection gave the best results. This suggests that adaptive generation and adaptive detection complement each other.
-
Limitation: in extremely low-entropy generation, the method loses most of its effect. The authors note this applies to all green-red list schemes.
