EvoMemKG: An Evolvable Memory Agent for Multi-hop Knowledge Graph Reasoning

Paper · 2026 · Shiyu Tian, Shuyue Xing, Zhuoxin Han et al.

Summary

Multi-hop question answering over knowledge graphs strains LLM agents in two ways. As the agent walks across more edges, the number of candidate states grows explosively and overflows the context window. Each question is also handled from scratch, so lessons from earlier successful searches are lost. EvoMemKG is a training-free agent framework that targets both problems with two memory layers.

  • Working memory groups retrieved triplets by relation and merges their head and tail entities into indexed entity sets. This keeps the full reasoning chain visible in very few tokens.
  • Experience memory turns solved trajectories into abstract, type-level strategies that can be reused on new queries.

An inner loop handles step-by-step exploration, and an outer loop initializes memory and distills experience after each task. Across three KGQA datasets built on two KGs, the method reaches state-of-the-art results without fine-tuning or extra tools. Gains reach about 20% over strong baselines on harder multi-hop questions. This shows that structured, evolving memory can make graph-traversing agents both cheaper and better over time.

Key points

  • The working memory reduces average per-sample context dramatically. On 1-hop queries it falls from 6,678 to 105 tokens (98.43% compression). On 5-hop queries it falls from 115,585 to 240 tokens (99.79%).
  • Strategy reuse is concentrated: the 20% most-used strategies serve 41.7% of queries, and the top 80% cover 85.9%.
  • Hits@1 rises while roughly the first 300 strategies accumulate and then levels off. It moves from 0.653 early to 0.803 late, a 22.9% relative gain.
  • In one case study, over 5,000 "instance of human" triplets were collapsed into a single index entry.
  • The authors list three limitations:
    • Strategy abstraction depends on KGs with clean type ontologies.
    • Performance is weaker at cold start, when memory is empty.
    • Cost and latency depend on the LLM API used.
