ClimateGPT: Towards AI Synthesizing Interdisciplinary Research on Climate Change
Paper · 2024 · David Thulke, Yingbo Gao, Petrus Pelser et al.
Summary
General-purpose LLMs handle climate change poorly because the topic spans the natural sciences, economics and social science. They also tend to hallucinate and mostly serve English speakers. The authors present ClimateGPT, a family of climate-focused models.
- From-scratch training: two 7B models were trained on a 300B-token science-oriented corpus. One saw the 4.2B-token climate collection during pre-training. The other was adapted to the climate domain afterwards.
- Continued pre-training: 7B, 13B and 70B variants were built by continuing to pre-train Llama 2 on the same climate data.
- Instruction tuning: all models were tuned on human-written instruction data produced together with climate scientists.
- Retrieval: a hierarchical retrieval scheme grounds answers in curated sources such as IPCC reports.
- Multilingual access: cascaded machine translation serves non-English users.
- Perspectives: the system can give separate natural-science, economic and social answers alongside an overall summary.
On a new suite of climate benchmarks, ClimateGPT-7B performs as well as Llama-2-70B Chat without losing general-domain ability, and human evaluation broadly agrees. This shows that small domain models can match much larger ones at a fraction of the energy cost.
Key points
- Released models: ClimateGPT-7B, 13B and 70B (from Llama 2), plus two 7B from-scratch models. All were trained using renewable energy and are published on Hugging Face under
eci-io. - The climate-specific pre-training data totals 4.2B tokens. The from-scratch models used a 300B-token science-heavy corpus.
- Cascaded MT on the Arabic subset of EXAMS raised Llama-2-13B-Chat from 25.0 to 38.0. That comes close to Jais-13B-Chat at 40.9, which was evaluated natively in Arabic.
- The authors report about 12× lower inference energy and CO2 than Llama-2-70B for comparable results.
- Stated limitations:
- no RLHF;
- no domain-specific tokenizer;
- a plain bi-encoder retriever without reranking;
- no systematic measurement of hallucination reduction.
