T2I-ReasonBench: Benchmarking Reasoning-Informed Text-to-Image Generation
Paper · 2026 · Kaiyue Sun, Rongyao Fang, Chengqi Duan et al.
Summary
Most text-to-image (T2I) benchmarks check whether a picture matches the surface wording of a prompt, such as objects, colours, counts and spatial relations. T2I-ReasonBench targets something different: whether a model can work out what a prompt actually implies before it draws. Its 800 English prompts are divided equally among four categories, namely Scientific Reasoning, Entity Reasoning, Textual Image Design and Idiom Interpretation.
Scoring happens in two stages. First, an LLM writes question-criterion pairs specific to each prompt, describing what a correctly reasoned image must contain. Second, an MLLM inspects the image and scores it against those criteria. The results are combined into T2I-ReasonScore, which covers reasoning accuracy, detail faithfulness and image quality. The authors report that this score agrees well with human ratings.
Sixteen models were tested, including diffusion systems, unified multimodal models (UMMs) and proprietary services. The study finds two main weaknesses:
- many models cannot reason about the prompt's hidden meaning at all;
- models that do reason correctly in text often fail to carry that understanding into the image.
This matters because image quality and literal alignment alone overstate how capable T2I systems really are.
Key points
- Prompt sources: the Idiom Interpretation prompts are built from 200 everyday idioms, taken from a book and the web and embedded by an LLM into sentences that do not reveal their meaning. The Textual Image Design prompts are derived from 200 real-world images rich in text.
- Models evaluated: 16 in total, namely 8 diffusion models (e.g., SD-3.5-Medium, Flux.1-Schnell), 5 UMMs (e.g., Bagel) and 3 proprietary systems (e.g., GPT-Image-1, Gemini-2.0).
- Bagel: it can spell out a correct interpretation of a prompt before generating, yet the resulting image may still contradict that plan.
- Proprietary failures: Nano-Banana shows a pure reasoning failure, missing the physical consequences in a prompt. GPT-4o shows an integration failure, identifying the entity correctly but ignoring it in the image.
- Stated limitations: the benchmark is English-only, relies on LLM/MLLM judges that may be biased, and analyses the reasoning-generation gap on only a subset of models.
