SALMON: Self-Alignment with Instructable Reward Models
Paper · 2023 · Zhiqing Sun, Yikang Shen, Hongxin Zhang et al.
Summary
The paper tackles the heavy cost of aligning large language models with SFT plus RLHF, which needs many human-written demonstrations and preference labels. That requirement may also break down once models attempt tasks people cannot reliably judge. The authors ask whether AI feedback alone can align a base model from scratch, without any RLHF warm-up. Their method, SALMON, centres on an "instructable" reward model. It is trained on synthetic preference data and scores responses according to whatever written principles it receives. Earlier RLAIF/Constitutional AI setups used principles only to create preference labels. In SALMON, changing the principles during RL directly reshapes the reward. For example, new rules can penalize observed reward hacking such as self-praise, or reduce over-cautious refusals. Combined with Self-Align on LLaMA-2-70b, this produces Dromedary-2. Its human input is just 6 in-context exemplars and 31 principles, yet it beats LLaMA-2-Chat-70b on several benchmarks. This shows that strong alignment is possible with far less human supervision and with more control over model behaviour.
Key points
- Base model is LLaMA-2-70b, and the resulting assistant is Dromedary-2, trained with Self-Align followed by SALMON RL.
- Human supervision consisted of 6 ICL exemplars and 31 principles (17 from Self-Align, 14 for SALMON), with zero preference annotations.
- On MT-Bench, Dromedary-2 scores 7.4, ahead of LLaMA-2-Chat-70b at 6.9. LLaMA-2-Chat used 27,540 demonstrations and 1,418,091 preference labels.
- Principle sets can be swapped in to stress helpfulness, honesty or harmlessness (HHH), to counter reward hacking, or to cut false refusals.
- Code and model weights are released at github.com/IBM/SALMON.
