MT-OSC: Path for LLMs that Get Lost in Multi-Turn Conversation
Paper · 2026 · Jyotika Singh, Fang Tu, Miguel Ballesteros et al.
Summary
LLMs perform noticeably worse when a task's instructions and context are spread across several dialogue turns. The usual fix, resending the entire chat history, consumes context window, latency and compute as conversations grow. The authors propose MT-OSC (One-off Sequential Condensation). It periodically compresses blocks of earlier turns in the background, so users see no delay and no model needs fine-tuning. A Condenser Agent drives the process. It pairs an LLM condenser, prompted with hand-written few-shot examples and rationales, with a rule-based Decider that skips condensation for information-dense, highly overlapping dialogues.
The method was tested on 13 state-of-the-art LLMs and 10 multi-turn benchmarks, including sharded underspecified tasks and episodic MT-Eval tasks. Accuracy stayed the same or improved, and history tokens fell by up to 72% in 10-turn chats. Gains held when distracting or redundant turns were injected. The work offers a practical way to deploy chat systems that is cheaper, faster and less prone to losing context.
Key points
- Framework design:
- The Condenser is Llama-3.3-70B-Instruct, guided by curated exemplars that are independent of the evaluation data. The exemplars show when to keep text verbatim, when to merge turns, and when to drop irrelevant ones.
- The Decider uses lemmatized content-word overlap between assistant turns. Example thresholds are γ ≈ 0.2 and τ ≈ 1000 user tokens.
- Benchmarks:
- Six sharded tasks from Laban et al. (2025): Spider, HumanEval, GSM8K, BFCL, Summary of Haystack and ToTTo.
- MT-Eval Recollection, Expansion, Follow-up and Refinement (Kwan et al., 2024).
- Efficiency: up to 72% fewer chat-history tokens in 10-exchange dialogues.
- Robustness: three noisy variants were tested: Repetition Infusion, Filler Injection and Contextual Diversion.
- Noise lowered baseline multi-turn scores by about 7.88% for Contextual Diversion and 2.5–3% for the other two variants.
- MT-OSC recovered roughly 4% absolute, and up to 7% on Contextual Diversion.
- Ablation: a generic summarization prompt often dropped key user instructions, which shows that the few-shot Condenser is essential.
