Field of Science and Technology Classification of Academic Documents in Portuguese
Paper · 2026 · Ivo Simões, Hugo Gonçalo Oliveira and João Correia
Summary
Academic repositories often have missing or wrong metadata. In Estudo Geral (EG), the University of Coimbra's repository, many theses have no OECD Field of Science and Technology (FOS) label. The authors treat FOS assignment for Portuguese theses as a five-class text classification problem. Agricultural Sciences is left out because the university has no unit in that area. They built a dataset of 9,696 theses, each described by title, keywords and abstract. Records that were incomplete or had several FOS labels were removed, and the data was split 80/20 with stratification. Four encoders were fine-tuned and compared against five decoder LLMs prompted zero-shot in Portuguese with structured output. The fine-tuned encoders clearly performed better. BERTimbau reached a macro F1 of about 0.88 using all three fields, roughly 17 points ahead of the best LLM. The authors describe this as the first study of the task for Portuguese. It suggests that small task-tuned models are still preferable when labelled data exist, with prompted LLMs as a fallback. The dataset and fine-tuned models are shared on HuggingFace.
Key points
- Encoders tested: multilingual cased BERT BASE, mE5 small, BERTimbau BASE and Albertina-100M-PTPT. Each was fine-tuned for 10 epochs with AdamW (lr 3×10⁻⁵), and results average four runs.
- Decoders tested zero-shot: GPT-5 Nano, gpt-oss-20b, Llama3.1-8B Instruct, Llama3.3-70B Instruct and Qwen3-8B. The best was Llama3.3 70B (F1 ≈ 0.71), and the weakest was Llama3.1 8B (≈ 0.64).
- Using title, keywords and abstract together gave the best results, with BERTimbau at F1 0.881. A title-only input, averaging about 25 tokens, still gave encoders F1 ≈ 0.78–0.79.
- The label distribution is skewed toward Medical and Health Sciences (34.0%) and Social Sciences (32.3%). Natural Sciences was the hardest class for both the best encoder and the best decoder.
- Qwen3 8B outperformed Llama3.1 8B on every field combination. The authors attribute this to Qwen3's stronger multilingual pretraining.
