AJ-Bench: Benchmarking Agent-as-a-Judge for Environment-Aware Evaluation

Paper · 2026 · Wentao Shi, Yu Wang, Yuyang Zhao et al.

Summary

As reinforcement learning is scaled up for LLM-based agents, checking whether an agent actually did its job becomes a bottleneck. Hand-written rule verifiers only work in narrow settings, and LLM-as-a-Judge models only read the text of a trajectory. Agent-as-a-Judge instead lets the evaluator use tools and probe the environment to gather evidence, but it had not been measured systematically. The authors built AJ-Bench to fill this gap. It contains 155 tasks and 516 trajectories labeled as positive or negative, spread over three domains: search, data systems (DS) and GUI. Judges are scored by F1 against these labels. The benchmark tests three abilities: finding external information, checking environment state and auditing the steps an agent took. Judges that act as agents beat text-only LLM judges by about 0.13 F1 on average. Their mean F1 is still only around 0.72, so the benchmark is far from solved. AJ-Bench offers a controlled testbed for building more reliable verifiers, for example as reward signals in agent training.

Key points

  • Task sources:
    • Search tasks are adapted from Mind2Web2 (deep, multi-hop search) and WideSearch (broad coverage). Short-answer and fast-changing tasks, such as shopping or travel, were removed.
    • DS tasks come from the MCPMark Filesystem and Postgres subsets.
    • GUI tasks come from OSWorld (PPT, Word, Excel).
  • Reasoning effort: More reasoning does not reliably help.
    • For gpt-5-mini, the medium setting (overall 75.99) beat both low and high.
    • For deepseek-v3.2, the thinking variant (77.11) was slightly worse than the non-thinking one (77.34).
  • Interaction budget: Allowing more interaction turns raised F1 everywhere, with the largest gains at small budgets. Word and PPT tasks were the most sensitive to the budget.
  • Input modality (GUI, gpt-5-mini-low and gemini-3-flash-preview): Combining screenshots with the accessibility tree is not uniformly better.
    • Mixed input worked best for Excel.
    • Screenshots alone worked best for Word.
  • Limitations: Most tasks are modified from existing benchmarks rather than built from scratch. Search-domain evaluation also depends on unstable live web access. Data and code are available at aj-bench.github.io.
