AnalystBench: Benchmarking professional long-form report generation with web-mined multimodal tasks

Paper · 2026 · Chau Minh Pham, Zichao Wang, Puneet Mathur et al.

Summary

Benchmarks for LLM-based report writing usually test isolated subskills, such as summarization or table aggregation. Benchmarks with realistic professional tasks, like GDPval, depend on costly expert-built tasks. AnalystBench aims to evaluate the whole analyst workflow at low cost.

The authors start from real professional reports found online (e.g., GAO, Pew, BLS, OECD), located through GPT-5 brainstorming and SerpAPI search. An LLM identifies the cited and uncited sources behind each report. These sources are scraped and stored offline, and the LLM then infers the task instruction that would have produced the report.

Each task has yearly or topical variants that can be regenerated over time, which limits data contamination. Systems are scored with expert-validated quality checklists and groundedness metrics, with web search turned off.

Models handle executive-summary tasks well but struggle with long synthesis over huge inputs. Agent scaffolding mainly helps strong closed models, and structural templates help more than larger models do. Experts judge the outputs grounded but often imprecise and not very actionable, so they are not yet ready for professional use.

Key points

  • Scale: 20 tasks with five variants each (100 instances) in legislative, statistical, economic and policy domains. Inputs average over 32M BPE tokens (tiktoken o200k_base) in mixed formats (.md, .csv, .xlsx, figures).
  • Cost: Building the tasks automatically cost $258.32, and generating the checklists cost $62.80.
  • Best system: GPT-5.1 with OpenHands reaches 79.51% on the checklists. It exceeds 90% on executive summaries but scores only 25–41% on long-horizon synthesis tasks.
  • Effect of agents: Agentic generation adds up to 21.27 checklist points and 39 visual-coverage points for GPT-5.1 and Gemini-3-Pro. It lowers scores for DeepSeek-R1 (−2.57) and Qwen3-32B (−4.56).
  • Structural guidance and release: Supplying a template document raises checklist scores by 30.82 points and cuts hallucination by 4.64 points. Only source URLs and reconstruction scripts are released; tasks built purely from U.S. government sources are available immediately.
