Decoding News Narratives: A Critical Analysis of Large Language Models in Framing Detection
Paper · 2026 · Valeria Pastorino, Jasivan Alex Sivakumar and Nafise Sadat Moosavi
Summary
Framing in news means highlighting some aspects of an event and downplaying others to steer how readers interpret it. Detecting it automatically is hard: manual annotation is expensive, and supervised classifiers tend to fail outside the topic they were trained on. The authors test whether instruction-following LLMs (GPT-4, GPT-3.5-Turbo, Llama 3 and FLAN-T5) can do this as a binary task, deciding whether a headline is framed or not. They compare zero-shot, few-shot and explanation-based prompts. Experiments use the Gun Violence Frame Corpus (GVFC) and a new out-of-domain set of headlines on many topics, released as the ITW dataset. LLMs, and GPT-4 in particular, transfer across domains better than fine-tuned models. However, results change a lot with prompt wording, and models make systematic mistakes on ambiguous headlines. GPT-4 often treats emotionally charged wording as framing, which produces false positives. The authors also show that agreement across several models can flag disputed gold labels. This gives a cheap way to audit datasets when resources are limited.
Key points
- GVFC setup: only headlines relevant to gun violence are used, and nine frame categories are collapsed into a single framed/not-framed label. The evaluation set has 2,594 headlines (1,293 framed, 1,301 not framed), so the majority baseline is 50.15%. Another 22 headlines are held out as few-shot examples.
- Models and prompts: GPT-4-0613 and GPT-3.5-turbo-0613 are run at temperature 0, alongside open-source Llama 3 and FLAN-T5. Few-shot variants use focused in-domain, varied in-domain, cross-domain and mixed-domain examples.
- FLAN-T5 results: without fine-tuning, FLAN-T5 stays around chance accuracy (about 50%). Fine-tuned FLAN-T5 Base reaches an F1 of about 79.8 on GVFC but falls to about 63.9 on ITW, which illustrates how domain shift hurts supervised models.
- Main error pattern: GPT-4 tends to confuse emotional language with framing.
- Resources: the ITW dataset is available at github.com/vpastorino/ITW-dataset, and the paper proposes cross-model consensus as a method for annotation auditing.
